Job summary

The Cincinnati Insurance Companies seeks an experienced excess and surplus lines underwriter in Maryland. The ideal candidate will reside in Maryland or near Fairfield, OH, with a projected start date of December 2026.

The pay range is $75,000 to $140,000 annually, with eligibility for an annual bonus and stock incentives depending on performance. This role requires property and casualty underwriting experience, strong analytical and negotiation abilities, and the capacity to build productive

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or extensive relevant excess and surplus lines underwriting experience.
• 5+ years of experience working with commercial lines property and casualty products is required.
• Prior excess and surplus casualty underwriting experience with a carrier, broker, or MGA is preferred.
• ASLI or CPCU designations are preferred.
• Candidates with a carrier background will be given preference; training is provided in Cincinnati, OH, prior to deployment to regional territory.

Responsibilities

• Work with producers and underwriting assistant to solicit, underwrite and price new and renewal surplus lines commercial property and casualty business.
• Determine risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms and conditions.
• Develop and evaluate information and exposures for complex risks.
• Aim for production and loss ratio goals within the territory.
• Work independently with a high level of authority and judgment.
• Determine need for and secure appropriate reinsurance on accounts.
• Mentor and train underwriters and assistants.
• Develop relationships with producers and reinsurers.
• Research new products and coverage forms.
• Travel within the assigned territory, possibly with overnight stays.

Our Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters Insurance Company has an immediate opening for an experienced excess and surplus lines underwriter in Maryland. The candidate is required to reside within this territory or in proximity to our Fairfield, OH Headquarters. The projected start date for this role is December 2026.

The pay range for this position is $75,000 - $140,000 annually. The pay determination is based on the applicant’s education, experience, location, knowledge, skills and abilities. Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives based on company and individual performance.

Be ready to:

• working in partnership with producers and an assigned underwriting assistant tosolicit, underwrite and price new and renewal surplus lines commercial property and casualty business
• determine individual risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms and conditions
• develop, analyze and evaluate information and exposures for complex risks
• achieve production and loss ratio goals within assigned regional territory
• work independently with a high level of authority and judgment

• mentor and train underwriters and underwriting assistants
• develop successful business relationships with producers and reinsurers
• research new products and coverage forms
• travel within assigned territory which may include some overnight stays

Be equipped with:

• property and casualty underwriting experience
• proficient use of Microsoft® Word, Excel and Outlook
• strong interpersonal skills
• organizational and time management skills
• strong decision-making, analytical, and negotiating abilities
• desire to build relationships and listen effectively
• ability to develop positive working relationships with team members and agents by working to find possible solutions that are beneficial to all
• skilled use of verbal communication to explain, negotiate and present information and an understanding of when to use verbal or written
• a valid driver’s license. Final candidates will also be subject to a Motor Vehicle Record background check, because the position may include a company vehicle
