Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking an Environmental Services (EVS) Technician to support janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center in New Orleans, LA.

The role reports to the Housekeeping Supervisor and requires adherence to sanitation, safety and infection control standards. The position involves cleaning patient rooms and restrooms, operating heavy cleaning equipment, stocking supplies, and following posted instructions and agency policies.

Qualifications

• Experience: no specific length of training required, but you must show evidence of training or experience relevant to performing the duties.
• Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
• Credit is given for all qualifying experience, including volunteer work, with full-year consideration defined as 35-40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Perform cleaning and sanitizing restrooms including urinals, commodes, sinks and mirrors.
• Clean patients' rooms using sanitizing products that do not compromise health to disinfect surfaces.
• Remove soiled linen from ward areas using proper collection methods for potentially contaminated items.
• Maintain stock of cleaning materials and equipment required to perform duties.
• Operate powered cleaning equipment such as scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet cleaning machines, and industrial vacuums.
• Keep equipment, cords, hoses, etc. clean and properly stored after use.
• Use ladders or scaffolds to wash ceiling fixtures and replace blinds or room partitions as needed.
• Perform routine maintenance on cleaning equipment (filters, brushes, nuts/bolts, greasing wheels).
• Push, pull, lift, carry, or move cleaning equipment for extended periods.
• Empty trash cans at various locations several times daily and adhere to safety and infection control procedures.
