EVP, Insurance Underwriting, Construction

Base pay range: $200,000 – $275,000 per year.

Additional compensation: Annual Bonus.

The Senior Vice President/Executive Vice President of Underwriting will serve as the strategic and operational leader for a national commercial insurance program focused on artisan contractors and construction‑related risks. This executive will set underwriting philosophy, drive profitable growth, and ensure disciplined risk selection across all program segments. The SVP will work closely with executive leadership, distribution partners, actuarial, claims, and product teams to deliver strong financial results while expanding market presence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set the overall underwriting strategy for the artisan contractors/construction program, including appetite, guidelines, and pricing direction.
  • Lead program expansion opportunities, evaluating new products, classes, territories, and distribution strategies.
  • Ensure alignment with corporate objectives related to growth, profitability, and risk management.
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce underwriting guidelines, authorities, workflows, and compliance protocols.
  • Oversee complex and high‑value underwriting decisions, ensuring adherence to risk appetite.
  • Partner with actuarial teams to establish rate adequacy, loss pick assumptions, and portfolio management actions.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, including rate, retention, hit ratio, mix of business, and loss trends; drive corrective actions when needed.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriting leaders, underwriters, and technical specialists.
  • Manage staffing, succession planning, performance evaluations, and training for underwriting staff.
  • Drive profitable new business growth through market insights, distribution strategy, and differentiated service.
  • Represent the program at industry events, presenting market perspectives and product knowledge.
  • Collaborate with product development, claims, compliance, and data analytics to ensure operational efficiency and customer experience.
  • Support the design and maintenance of rating models, underwriting tools, and portfolio dashboards.
  • Ensure underwriting practices align with regulatory requirements, internal audit standards, and corporate governance.
  • Oversee program documentation, filings, and compliance with state and program‑specific guidelines.
Qualifications
  • 12–15+ years of commercial underwriting experience, with deep expertise in artisan contractors, construction, or related casualty/property lines.
  • Proven leadership experience managing underwriting teams or large portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of program business, MGA/MGU models, and delegated authority oversight.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, or related field (advanced degree or CPCU/ARM a plus).
