Position Title: Event Crew Technician

FTE: On Call
Compensation: $18 - $23 per hour based on prior experience

Job Duties:

The Office of Events provides logistical and staff support for performances and other special events at Naropa University. We manage multiple event spaces, including the Performing Arts Center on the Arapahoe campus and the Nalanda Events Center on the Nalanda campus.

The Event Crew Technicians are responsible for providing technical support in the areas of event set-up and breakdown, lighting, sound, audio/visual, house management, and box office sales, as well as other behind-the-scenes operations. Events include theatrical performances, music, dance, lectures, readings, the Summer Writing Program, live recordings, meetings, conferences and more.

We are offering a flexible work schedule, based on event schedules and needs as well as employee availability, in on-call (from 0, and up to 20 hours) positions.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Ability to create and maintain a positive team environment and behave professionally with everyone encountered in the course and scope of the job duties.
  2. Assist or manage stage set up, room set up, backstage, green room, program timing, stage equipment, media projection.
  3. Assist with properly and safely hanging and setting up lighting instruments, rigging, pipes, and cables. Circuit and test electrical equipment, including dimmer packs, lights, and other equipment.
  4. Properly setup A/V equipment.
  5. Assemble and disassemble scaffolding. Climb and use scaffolding within safety guidelines.
  6. Use mast lift within safety guidelines.
  7. Attend trainings, crew meetings, and interviews related to events and performances.
  8. Assist with transitions during shows (microphone adjustments, setup changes, etc.)
  9. Manage the front of house at events: set up box office operations for show, sell tickets for events, and reconcile all sales at the end of show. Manage advance registration and comp lists at the door.
  10. Provide customer service and assist with any questions from attendees.
  11. Provide support for hybrid classroom technology when needed.
  12. Lead sound checks with performers and speakers.
  13. Execute all sound cues per design requirements under supervision of Stage Manager.
  14. Program, record, and execute light cues.
  15. Assist with light hang and focus, update lighting plot, set up cue sheets.
  16. Light construction duties, occasionally with power tools.
  17. Can also expect to be called in to work as available for load-ins, hang and focus, sound checks, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and performances, concerts, readings, seminars and community events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum length of prior relevant professional experience required:

  1. 6 months – 2 years’ experience on a technical theatre crew.

Other Experience, Knowledge, Skills, or Competencies Requirements:

  1. Familiarity with computers.
  2. Punctuality, dependability, ingenuity, teamwork, and honesty.
  3. Ability to work as scheduled, and occasionally beyond; must be available some evenings and weekends.
  4. A good attitude and a sense of humor.
  5. Must wear appropriate clothing (all black, including Naropa Crew T-Shirt).

  7. Ability to receive and respond to emails in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualification:

  1. Experience performing the technical event duties described above and doing one or more of the following: Stage Manager, Light Design, Sound Board Operation, Video Recording and Editing.

Physical Requirements & Environmental Conditions:

  1. Maximum amount of weight employee must be able to lift/carry with or without reasonable accommodation(s): 50 pounds.

  3. During regular daily activities, employee may be exposed to the following: Interruptions/Distractions, Heat/Cold, Dust, Heights, Moving machinery parts, Lighting & Fog Effects. Noise conditions are frequently in the medium level, occasionally in the higher level when live entertainment is performing and on busy days with full staff on duty.
