Job summary

Champaign Public Library seeks a part-time Security Officer to monitor the library buildings and grounds, greet patrons, enforce rules, and assist with emergencies. The role includes opening and closing duties, extensive roaming, and guiding visitors to safety as needed.

Responsibilities cover incident reporting, staff briefings, and maintaining a safe, welcoming atmosphere. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, strong communication skills, and the ability to work a varied

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to public service.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
• Knowledge of fire and security alarm systems.
• Familiarity with CCTV software.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history.
• Satisfactory pre-employment background check.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience working with children and teens preferred.
• Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Conduct roving patrols of library buildings and grounds, maintaining high visibility to deter misbehavior and ensure a safe environment.
• Greet customers and brief staff upon arrival at assigned branch.
• Respond to emergencies and assist with lost items or illnesses.
• Open buildings and secure them at closing.
• Escort disruptive customers from premises and call police when necessary.
• Assist with weather emergencies and shelter guidance for customers.
• Complete incident reports and participate in drills.
• Provide excellent internal and external customer service.
