Job summary

Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a TES Assistant for the J. T. Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital.

This role provides technical support to veterinarians diagnosing and treating food and fiber producing species, including training on husbandry, nutrition, handling, restraint and ethology. Evening hours are 6:00pm–11:00pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional on-call hours. Temporary Employment Services (TES) supports Auburn University by providing qualified

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience handling and managing food animals safely.
• Working knowledge of cattle management.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates veterinary diagnostics and treatments in a safe manner by administering medications, routine vaccinations, and treatment according to prescribed instructions.
• Assists clinicians with student examination, treatment, research, projects, surgery, restraint, sample collection in animals, and assists in emergency and critical care of patients.
• Operates, maintains, repairs, and cleans hospital, laboratory and research equipment as well as maintains inventories for the laboratory and clinical area.
• Assist supervisor in training laboratory animal caretakers/students regarding care of animals, preventative medicine practices, collection of specimens, and handling of animal including food and fiber animals.
• Performs routine laboratory examinations including parasitology, bacteriology, hematology, and serology. Observes and records vital data, abnormal clinical signs, body weight, feed, water intake of animals, and collects and labels specimens.
• Schedules appointments for diagnostic procedures and advises referring veterinarians about the use of specialized equipment such as ultrasonography, anesthesia equipment, and other surgical supplies.
• Operates and maintains equipment such as loaders, skid steers, tractors, forklifts, etc. to facilitate the movement of heavy objects, animals or filler materials for stall repairs.
