Job summary

Montefiore Medical Center's Surgical Pathology Lab seeks a Clinical Laboratory Technologist to perform paraffin processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining for surgical and biopsy specimens. You will operate histology equipment, maintain records, and support immunohistochemistry and regulatory compliance.

The position is located at Moses campus in New York with a 6:00pm–10:30pm shift and alternating weekends; NY licensure and histology/IHC proficiency are required or preferred as noted.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science required.
• New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License required; ASCP HT/HTL preferred.
• Histopathology experience preferred.
• Proficiency in embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, staining preferred.
• Experience with IHC staining, including antibody selection, optimization, and troubleshooting preferred.
• Skilled in operating microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, and automated stainers.
• Knowledge of tissue fixation, processing parameters, and artifact recognition.
• Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, and NYSDOH regulatory requirements.
• Experience maintaining accurate QC/QA and equipment maintenance documentation.

Responsibilities

• Run tissue processor to produce paraffin blocks.
• Embed pathology specimen to view all layers.
• Cut pathology specimens on rotary microtome.
• Stain routine Hematoxylin Eosin and routine special stains (GMS, AFB, PAS).
• Perform enzyme histochemistry (leder esterase).
• Enter orders and update LISA to bill stains.
• Label and sign out slides for distribution.
• Cover slipper (manual and automated) to ensure proper coverslip.
• Maintain QA/QC and record equipment maintenance.
• Prepare solutions for histological processing.
• Process requests from residents and attendings for work orders.
• Assist in Immunohistochemistry procedures.
• File paraffin blocks and slides.
• Prioritize duties and tissue handling; troubleshoot procedures.
• Perform other duties as needed.
