Job summary

DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) in Seattle seeks energized Residential Counselors to manage day-to-day operations at our Permanent Supportive Housing Projects. Counselors assist residents with daily needs, focusing on those with severe mental illness and substance use disorders.

Responsibilities include coordinating services with clinical staff, engaging residents in activities, maintaining building operations, and ensuring safety and compliance across the site.

Qualifications

• Basic understanding of homelessness and characteristics of homeless adults.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff from various backgrounds.
• Ability to work with clients displaying a wide range of behaviors.
• Respect for clients and commitment to cooperative program philosophy.

Responsibilities

• Interact with residents in the general milieu and common areas.
• Assist clinical staff in coordinating services for residents and liaising with outside providers.
• Engage residents through creative strategies to build trust and confidence.
• Facilitate on-site activities, therapy groups, outings and community meetings.
• Manage building operations in the absence of other staff.
• Operate lobby functions: check-in/out visitors, answer phones, monitor security.
• Maintain safety by monitoring access areas and enforcing rules.
• Intervene in crises and contact emergency systems when needed.
• Document significant events in a daily log and read logs daily.
• Assist with room turnovers, leasing, orientation, rent collection and inspections.
• Respond to resident complaints.
• Coordinate with clinical/maintenance staff and refer residents to services.
• Address maintenance requests and participate in staff meetings.
• Assist with other property management duties as assigned.
