Gray Media is seeking a decisive Assignment News Editor to lead evening news-gathering operations for KOLO-TV/Gray Media. You will coordinate field crews, monitor breaking developments, and ensure fast, accurate coverage across broadcast, web, and streaming platforms.

The ideal candidate brings 2+ years in a commercial newsroom, strong news judgment, and a calm, collected presence under pressure. This role requires cross-functional collaboration and a community-first mindset.

Qualifications

2+ years of experience in a commercial newsroom (assignment desk, producing, or digital reporting preferred).
Deep understanding of defamation laws, journalistic ethics, AP Style, and what makes a story impactful for local audiences.
Ability to track multiple moving parts, crews, and short-term deadlines simultaneously under pressure.
Proven leadership to rally teams and foster a positive newsroom culture.

Responsibilities

Drive the Daily Agenda by monitoring scanner traffic, social media, wire services, public records, and viewer tips to identify local stories.
Attend daily editorial meetings and pitch story ideas for potential coverage.
Coordinate daily assignments, scheduling, and logistics for reporters, photographers, and MSJs to maximize impact.
Lead with calm decisiveness during breaking news and ensure clear communication across platforms.
