Job summary

Mcbain is seeking an Evening Custodian to keep our school clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and the community. The role covers routine custodial duties and light maintenance, ensuring facilities are ready for the next school day.

Evening shifts with summer hours, hourly pay per the collective bargaining agreement; training provided. You must be able to lift 50 pounds, work independently, and maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety.

Responsibilities

• Cleaning & sanitation of classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms and common areas.
• Building readiness: set up/tear down for events, secure spaces, restock supplies.
• Safety & security: lock/unlock doors, report concerns, follow safety protocols.
• Assist with snow/ice removal and light maintenance.

Position: Full-Time - School Custodian

Reports To: Head Custodian / Maintenance Director

Schedule: Evening hours and Summer hours

Status: Full-Time / Hourly Rate based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Position Summary

The Evening Custodian is essential in creating and maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and community members. This position performs routine custodial duties and light maintenance and ensures facilities are ready for the next school day.

Key Responsibilities

• Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, and common areas.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers, replace liners, and dispose of waste properly.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, toilets, mirrors, floors, and replenishing supplies.
  • Wipe down desks, tables, and frequently touched surfaces.
• Building Readiness
  • Set up and tear down furniture/equipment for events, meetings, or athletic activities as needed.
  • Ensure classrooms, gyms, and common spaces are secured, locked, and ready for the next day.
  • Restock cleaning and restroom supplies as necessary.
• Safety & Security
  • Lock and unlock designated doors and windows.
  • Report maintenance or safety concerns (such as leaks, broken equipment, or security issues) to the Head Custodian.
  • Follow all district safety protocols, including use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.

Other Duties

• Assist with snow/ice removal on walkways during winter months (as needed).
• Perform light maintenance such as changing light bulbs, tightening screws, or reporting larger repairs.
• Support special custodial projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Previous custodial, cleaning, or maintenance experience helpful but not required—training provided.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical tasks (bending, lifting, standing for long periods).
• Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
• Must pass required background check.

Work Environment

• Primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor tasks.
• Evening shifts are scheduled after the school day; some flexibility for events and activities.
• Summer hours are scheduled during the day.
• Some weekends required
• May involve working around cleaning chemicals and equipment (PPE provided).
