Job summary

Sumitomo Electric is seeking an experienced Exterior Design/Release Engineer to join our automotive team in Troy, Michigan on a contract basis. You will lead design and release activities for exterior components and related structures, collaborating closely with cross‑functional teams to meet program goals and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET) with 8+ years of vehicle design experience, strong communication and teamwork

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
• 8+ years of vehicle design experience in the areas of interior and/or exterior trim.
• Knowledge of design considerations required for plastic/composite components.
• Excellent communication and team building skills.
• Broad knowledge of NHSTA/FMVSS requirements related to exterior components.
• Ability and Desire work in a fun and fast paced environment.

Responsibilities

• The DRE will be responsible for design and development of the exterior components and related structures across the organization.
• The DRE will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure on-time delivery and regulatory compliance.
