Job summary

Highland Electric Fleets seeks a Director of Engineering to lead the design, drafting, and utility interconnection for a growing EV charging, BESS, and edge compute portfolio. You will own engineering standards, playbooks, and quality gates across the full design lifecycle.

You will build and lead internal and external teams, serve as the senior technical authority on AHJ permitting, and ensure design outputs meet schedule and budget targets in a remote-friendly, fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field, or 12+ years of directly related experience.
• 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in EV charging, renewable energy, power infrastructure, or utility-scale development, including design management from concept through construction.
• 5+ years leading engineering teams, including managing managers and building or scaling a design organization.
• Demonstrated ownership of engineering standards, design package content, and QA/QC across a portfolio of concurrent projects.
• Proven experience selecting, contracting, and managing external engineering consultants at scale.
• Deep working knowledge of interconnection, new electrical service, and AHJ permitting requirements.
• Familiarity with interconnection standards (IEEE 1547, tariffs, interconnection rules).
• Expertise with CAD-based design delivery (AutoCAD) and design/review tooling (Procore, Bluebeam).

Responsibilities

• Lead and scale Highland's project engineering function from qualified site to permit-ready and construction-ready across EV charging, BESS, and edge compute sites.
• Define design package content and internal gates for conceptual, 30%, IFP, and IFC stages, keeping portfolios on an aggressive timeline.
• Build, develop, and retain a high-performing internal engineering team.
• Manage external engineering consultants to align capacity with portfolio volume.
• Set and enforce engineering, CAD, and design specifications; maintain AHJ and utility requirements repositories.
• Serve as Highland's senior technical authority on interconnection and permitting for EV charging, BESS, and edge compute.
• Input to project schedules and budgets; sequence design, interconnection, and permitting milestones for build-ready sites.
• Partner across Development, Execution, Origination, Procurement, and Fleet Operations to align engineering with portfolio priorities.
• Drive tooling and process automation to increase design velocity and unit economics as the portfolio scales.
• Provide engineering due diligence, estimating and risk input for new opportunities alongside Origination and Development.
