Job summary

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. is seeking a Self-Perform Estimator to contribute to bid and estimating activities with a primary focus on concrete work.

You will perform quantity take-offs, develop assumptions, and price projects by coordinating with subcontractors and architects. The role requires a degree in Construction Management or Engineering and at least two years of estimating experience, with strong math, analytical, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Review milestone documents for pricing opportunities and value contrasts.
• Participate in internal estimate reviews and present findings to management.
• Assist with final estimate assembly for owner presentation.
• Organize bid information post-bid for future reference.
• Support field operations with price changes as needed.
• Direct and coordinate with subcontractors and prepare subcontract scope exhibits.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Self-Perform Estimator will participate in all aspects of the bid and estimating process from review of plans and specs to soliciting and negotiating pricing from contractors and suppliers through completion of bid/estimating effort including closeout, with a primary focus on the concrete scope of work. Performs quantity take-offs, scoping, and bidding of construction projects involving more complex trade packages and self‑perform work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Estimating Support for Projects

• Performs quantity take-offs.
• Assists in the pricing and bidding of construction projects.
• Develops and documents logical assumptions during conceptual estimating activities and applies these assumptions to takeoff tasks.
• Communicates with architects and consultants to clarify scope of work, materials, and schedule requirements, and documents these clarifications.
• Conducts reviews of milestone documents for the development and pricing of value alternative opportunities.
• Actively participates in the internal estimate review process.
• Assists with final assembly of estimate for presentation to owner.
• After the bid, collects and organizes all bid information for future reference.
• Aids field operations with change order pricing if needed.

Subcontractor Analysis for Bids

• Directs, coordinates and provides information and documents to subcontractors.
• Prepares contractual exhibits for scope of work for subcontracts.
• Participates in hard bid/estimating and GMP budgeting activities by soliciting subcontractor support and evaluating bids.

Industry Knowledge/Relationships

• Builds relationships with subcontractors to obtain a competitive advantage for McCarthy.
• Attends industry events and represents McCarthy to the industry in a professional capacity.
• Builds and maintains relationships with internal McCarthy clients.
• Keeps current with latest estimating technology and techniques.
• Demonstrates basic conceptual estimating skills by interpolating data.
• Questions designs and assumptions and presents ideas to manager on the project.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors Degree in Construction Management or Engineering and minimum 2 years' experience required.
• General knowledge of construction principles and processes, with an emphasis on concrete work.
• Ability to synthesize cost data from a wide range of sources into a conceptual estimate.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
• General knowledge of negotiated bids, hard bids, and GMP processes.
• Working knowledge of estimating technology and tools such as OST, WinEst, Bluebeam and BIM related software.
• Strong math and analytical skills.
