Job summary

Hooper, a respected electric power and mechanical contractor, seeks an Estimator for Electric Power projects including T&D powerlines and substations. Based in Wisconsin with Colorado offices, the role focuses on detailed take-offs, pricing, and keeping estimating systems up to date.

You will develop bid schedules, source materials and subcontractor pricing, and support project cost evaluations with strong Excel and CAD/BIM skills. Occasional site visits required.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years technical education in engineering, construction management, or related apprenticeship.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong verbal and written communication.
• Strong computer skills with Excel, Word, Outlook; CAD/BIM drawing knowledge.
• Experience estimating 120–200 projects per year depending on size.

Responsibilities

• Develops a bid schedule in consultation with Department Head; procures and returns plans for projects to estimate.
• Prepares project estimates with detailed plan take-off and pricing of materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
• Updates material pricing and labor rates regularly to reflect changes.
• Maintains the estimating system and software.
• Prices change orders on large projects.
• Evaluates bid results to track pricing levels; upkeeps bid database.
• Evaluates completed job costs against estimates to aid future estimating.
• Develops rules of thumb for budgeting estimates.
• Attends departmental meetings and related functions.

Job description

The Estimator is responsible for estimating assigned "Electric Power" projects (e.g. T&D Powerlines and Substations) and the upkeep of estimating systems.

Principal Accountabilities:

• Develops a bid schedule in consultation with Department Head. Responsible for procuring and returning plans for projects to estimate.
• Prepares project estimates in a timely manner by engaging in detailed and accurate plan take-off, and solicitation of appropriate material, equipment and sub-contractor pricing.
• Updates material pricing and labor rates on regular intervals to reflect recent changes.
• Responsible for maintaining the estimating system, including software.
• Prices change orders on large projects.
• Evaluates bid results to track pricing levels. Upkeeps project bid database for future reference.
• Evaluates completed job costs against estimated budgeted costs to aid in future estimating.
• Develops "rules of thumb" estimating techniques and criteria for budget estimating.
• Other general tasks at the request of the department head.
• Attendance at departmental meetings and social functions is required.

Requirements:

• Minimum two years technical education in the engineering field, construction management coursework or completion of apprenticeship in a respective discipline. Prior estimating experience in the plumbing / piping industry preferred.
• Analytical and problem solving, strong interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
• General computer skills required with a good working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook and a good understanding of CAD/BIM drawings.
• Comfortable with a wide range of project budgets and estimating 120 - 200 estimates per year based on size.

Description of Physical Working Environment:

• Works in a normal office environment and makes site visits when necessary, requiring driving a personal vehicle. When in the office, regularly works from a sitting or standing position with a computer. Repetitive typing and computer use required. Regular bending, twisting, and light lifting are common, and the ability to climb up and down ladders and steps on site is required with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Visits construction site in all kinds of weather to survey site conditions.
