Job summary

Hooper Deforest, based in Commerce City, CO, seeks an Estimating Manager to lead bid development for Electric Power projects. You will perform detailed plan take-offs, price materials and subcontractors, and maintain estimating systems.

The role requires at least 5 years of estimating experience in construction, strong analytical and leadership skills, and proficiency with Excel and CAD/BIM drawings. Occasional site visits may be necessary.

Qualifications

• Minimum two years technical education in the engineering field, construction management coursework or apprenticeship
• At least 5 years of prior estimating experience on construction projects and ability to lead teams
• Strong analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
• General computer skills with good working knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook and CAD/BIM drawings
• Experience handling 120–200 estimates per year across varied project sizes

Responsibilities

• Develop bid schedules in consultation with department head and manage plan take-offs
• Prepare project estimates with pricing for materials, equipment and subcontractors
• Update pricing and labor rates regularly to reflect changes
• Maintain the estimating system and software
• Price change orders on large projects
• Evaluate bid results and maintain a bid database for future use
• Mentor and train other estimators to ensure high performance
• Develop estimating rules of thumb and budget estimating criteria
• Attend department meetings and related functions

The Estimating Manager is responsible for estimating assigned “Electric Power” projects (e.g. T&D Powerlines and Substations) and the upkeep of estimating systems.

Principal Accountabilities:

• Develops a bid schedule in consultation with department head. Responsible for procuring and returning plans for projects to estimate.
• Prepares project estimates in a timely manner by engaging in detailed and accurate plan take-off, and solicitation of appropriate material, equipment and sub-contractor pricing.
• Updates material pricing and labor rates on regular intervals to reflect recent changes.
• Responsible for maintaining the estimating system, including software.
• Prices change orders on large projects.
• Evaluates bid results to track pricing levels. Upkeeps project bid database for future reference.
• Evaluates completed job costs against estimated budgeted costs to aid in future estimating.
• Manages, trains, and mentors other estimators to ensure high performance.
• Develops “rules of thumb” estimating techniques and criteria for budget estimating.
• Other general tasks at the request of the department head.
• Attendance at departmental meetings and social functions is required.

Requirements

• Minimum two years technical education in the engineering field, construction management coursework or completion of apprenticeship in a respective discipline.
• At least 5 years of prior estimating experience with related construction industry projects. Comfortable leading and guiding teams involved with company projects.
• Analytical and problem solving, strong interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
• General computer skills required with a good working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook and a good understanding of CAD/BIM drawings.
• Comfortable with a wide range of project budgets and estimating 120 - 200 estimates per year based on size.

Description of Physical Working Environment:

• Works in a normal office environment and makes site visits when necessary, requiring driving a personal vehicle. When in the office, regularly works from a sitting or standing position with a computer. Repetitive typing and computer use required. Regular bending, twisting, and light lifting are common, and the ability to climb up and down ladders and steps on site is required with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Visits construction site in all kinds of weather to survey site conditions.
