Job summary

FirstCall Mechanical is seeking an Estimator in South Amboy, NJ to support our HVAC cost estimating team. You’ll learn HVAC system costing and scope development under senior estimators and project managers to build accurate estimates for various commercial/industrial projects.

The role requires 2+ years in HVAC or estimating, strong Excel skills, and experience with estimating software such as Accubid. A valid driver’s license and the ability to work on-site are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or trade school preferred.
• 2+ years in HVAC, estimating, or construction support.
• Understanding blueprint reading and electrical drawings.
• Proficient in MS Excel, Word, Outlook; experience with estimating software.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

• Assist in quantity take-offs and basic labor/material cost calculations for HVAC systems.
• Review project plans and specifications under supervision.
• Support bid processes with subcontractor and vendor quotes.
• Organize estimate documentation for submission.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits with estimators or PMs.
• Maintain bid files and follow up on vendor information.
• Enter estimate data into bid software and spreadsheets.
• Learn estimating lifecycle from bid to hand-off.

Position Overview

This Estimator is responsible for supporting the estimating team in preparing accurate and timely cost estimates for HVAC projects. This role is ideal for a motivated individual interested in building a career in project management, estimating, or construction operations. This Estimator will work under the guidance of senior estimators and project managers to learn the foundations of HVAC system costing and scope development.

Job Responsibilities

• Assist in quantity take-offs and basic labor/material cost calculations for HVAC systems
• Review project plans, specifications, and scopes of work under supervision
• Support bid preparation processes including compiling subcontractor and vendor quotes
• Help develop and organize the estimate documentation for submission
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits with estimators or project managers
• Maintain project bid files and follow up on outstanding vendor or subcontractor information
• Enter estimate data into bid software or spreadsheets for tracking and analysis
• Work closely with team members to learn the estimating lifecycle from bid to hand-off

Accountabilities

• Maintain accuracy and attention to detail in all assigned tasks
• Deliver work in a timely manner and meet internal estimate deadlines
• Communicate effectively with team members and request guidance when needed
• Follow safety procedures and company policies when on job sites

ORGANIZATIONAL ALIGNMENT

This position reports to the local Operations Manager.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or trade school experience preferred
• 2+ years of experience in HVAC, estimating, or construction support (including internships or co-op experience)
• Understanding of blueprint reading, construction documents, electrical drawings, and set up estimate folders
• Ability to do quantity take offs and write up proposals
• Ability to send out packages for pricing as well as review same when returned from vendors
• Manage Electrical Estimating team
• Coordinate with operations for hand off of projects
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; experience with estimating and construction software
• Experience in Accubid, preferred
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

BEHAVIORAL PROFILE

Mathematical Ability

Strong basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and unit conversions. Comfort with spreadsheets and data entry.

Reasoning Ability

Able to follow instructions, prioritize tasks, and seek clarification as needed. Capable of basic troubleshooting and problem-solving within assigned work.

Physical Demands

Primarily office-based with occasional site visits. May involve walking job sites, climbing ladders, or light lifting up to 25 lbs when assisting with site assessments.
