Job summary

JJB South is seeking an experienced Estimator to prepare accurate estimates for civil construction projects, including underground utilities and site development.

You will review plans, perform quantity takeoffs, develop pricing, solicit vendor quotes, identify risks, and support the bid process from review to handoff. Strong knowledge of HCSS HeavyBid and 5+ years of estimating in civil construction preferred.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of estimating experience in civil construction.
• Experience with underground utilities, site development, earthwork or related civil scopes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and bid documents.
• Strong understanding of quantity takeoffs, labor, equipment, materials and pricing.
• Experience with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid.

Overview:

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and complete estimates for civil construction projects, including underground utilities and site development. This role reviews project plans and specifications, performs quantity takeoffs, develops pricing, obtains vendor and subcontractor quotes, identifies project risks, and supports the bid process from initial review through project handoff.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Review plans, specifications, addenda, bid documents, and project requirements to understand project scope.
• Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for underground utilities, site development, earthwork, and related civil construction scopes.
• Prepare estimates incorporating labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, production rates, indirect costs, and other project requirements.
• Request, track, review, and compare vendor and subcontractor quotes.
• Identify scope gaps, project risks, exclusions, clarifications, and constructability concerns.
• Prepare and maintain estimates in HCSS HeavyBid and supporting estimating documentation.
• Participate in internal bid reviews and make necessary revisions prior to submission.
• Assist with bid forms, proposals, pricing documentation, and final bid preparation.
• Maintain organized estimate files, takeoff backup, quotes, assumptions, and project documentation.
• Track bid results and incorporate lessons learned and market feedback into future estimates.
• Coordinate with project management and operations to provide a complete and organized handoff for awarded projects.

Experience Required:

• 5+ years of estimating experience in civil construction preferred.
• Experience with underground utilities, site development, earthwork, or related civil construction scopes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and bid documents.
• Strong understanding of quantity takeoffs, labor, equipment, materials, production rates, and construction pricing.
• Experience with HCSS HeavyBid or similar estimating software preferred.
• Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and time-management skills.
