Job summary

SMS group is seeking an estimator to work with the Plant Management and Sales Team to cost out jobs, prepare quotations, and route jobs through the workshop.

You will estimate costs from bid specs and drawings, program CNC machines for productivity, and monitor performance for improvements. Good reading of drawings and a strong mechanical background are required.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and interpret detail drawings and specs.
• Strong mechanical background.
• Experience with DIN specification standards is a plus.
• Proficient with MS Word and Excel.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Creative problem-solving abilities.
• Able to adapt to a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Estimate job costs from bid specs, drawings, and data.
• Determine work scope, tools, and equipment.
• Calculate raw material, freight, outside services costs.
• Compute machine cycle times and man-hours.
• Prepare and send quotes to customers.
• Enter quote and router data into GSS.
• Open won quotes as jobs.
• Program CNC machines to optimize productivity and quality.
• Monitor machine performance and identify process improvements.
• Track job performance and deviations from quotes.

What You’ll Do

• Estimate job costs using customer bid specifications, detail drawings, historical data, and other information prepare accurate job cost analysis including:
• Determine work scope, tools, and equipment requirements
• Raw Material Costs
• Freight Costs
• Outside Service and Sub-Contractor Costs
• Machine Cycle Times
• Fabrication Man-hours
• Inspection Man-hours
• Assembly Man-hours
• Prepare and send quote documents to customers
• Enter quote data into GSS for tracking purposes
• Enter router information into GSS
• Open Jobs for “won” quotes
• Program CNC Machines to optimize productivity and quality
• Monitor performance of machine programs and evaluate opportunities to improve processes.
• Track job performance and monitor for deviations from quoted times and costs.

What you’ll need

• Proficient in reading and interpreting detail drawings, technical specifications, and production orders
• Good mechanical background
• Experience working with DIN Spec Standards is a plus
• Good computer skills and proficiency in MS Word and Excel
• Good organizational skillsGood interpersonal and communications skills
• Creativity and problem-solving abilities
• Flexibility to respond to a fast-paced environment with frequent changes in priorities
