Position Summary

The Estimator is responsible for preparing complete cost estimates for construction and life safety projects, including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and related project costs. This role works closely with operations, project management, vendors, and customers to ensure estimates are accurate, competitive, and completed within established bid schedules.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Estimating & Project Support
  • Review project plans, specifications, drawings, and bid documents to determine project scope and requirements.
  • Prepare complete and accurate cost estimates with minimal supervision.
  • Develop detailed labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and material takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare project cost breakdowns and estimate summaries.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and incorporate vendor and subcontractor quotations into final estimates.
  • Coordinate estimate documentation and project information for turnover to project management upon project award.
  • Maintain estimate records and supporting documentation for future reference and analysis.
  • Support operations and project teams with pricing, budgeting, and proposal development activities.
Customer Service & Professionalism
  • Represent the company in a professional manner that enhances customer relationships and company reputation.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal team members.
  • Provide exceptional customer service throughout the estimating and proposal process.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making to support successful project outcomes.
Compliance & Safety
  • Maintain all certifications, licenses, and continuing education requirements applicable to the position.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Follow all company substance abuse and drug-free workplace policies.
  • Promote a safe work environment and exercise authority to stop unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Previous estimating experience in fire alarm, low-voltage, electrical, fire protection, construction, or related industries preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction estimating principles and project bidding processes.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications, and construction documents preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of fire alarm, fire protection, and applicable industry codes and standards preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and low-voltage system plans, including:
    • Fire Alarm Systems
    • Security Systems
    • CCTV Systems
    • Paging and Intercom Systems
    • Structured Cabling Systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent customer service and relationship‑building skills.
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and estimating‑related software applications.
  • Ability to interact professionally with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and team members at all organizational levels.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer and reviewing project documents.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, and printers.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle and travel as needed to customer sites, project locations, and company offices.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments.
  • Ability to bend, reach, crouch, push, pull, and carry materials when necessary.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, noise, and construction environments.
