Job summary

McCormick Construction is seeking an Estimator to analyze project requirements and develop cost proposals for clients, reviewing plans, specifications, and vendor quotes.

The role supports proposal presentations, collaborates with project teams, and helps transition awarded work to the Project Manager team, while monitoring costs and maintaining Buildr data for accurate estimates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, accounting, statistics, or related field.
  • Training in estimating or project management with relevant work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience as an estimator.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze project requirements to develop cost proposals.
  • Review plans and specifications to prepare quantity takeoffs and estimates.
  • Obtain quotes and manage vendor bids within deadlines.
  • Support proposal presentations and client meetings.
  • Transition awarded projects to the Project Manager team.
  • Monitor costs and keep Buildr data up to date.

Job description

Description

The Estimator is responsible for analyzing project requirements and developing accurate, complete cost proposals for clients. This includes reviewing plans and specifications, researching materials, transportation, labor, subcontractor, and equipment costs, identifying risks and assumptions, obtaining information through site visits when needed, supporting proposal presentations, and helping transition awarded projects to the Project Manager team.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Conduct cost analysis for materials, transportation, labor, and equipment.
  • Cultivate and manage professional relationships with contractors and vendors.
  • Conduct site visits as needed to review existing conditions, verify measurements, gather project-specific information, and identify factors that may affect scope, schedule, budget, safety, or constructability before preparing a proposal.
  • Obtain quotes from suppliers and contractors within set deadlines, distribute bids among multiple parties to determine the most competitive option for estimates.
  • Evaluate project risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Prepare and submit detailed cost breakdowns and proposals for project work.
  • Collaborate on contract bids and provide support to the procurement team.
  • Participate in proposal reviews and client presentations when required, including explaining scope assumptions, exclusions, pricing approach, schedule considerations, and other proposal details.
  • Participate in project handoff meetings for awarded work, ensuring the Project Manager team receives complete estimating information, scope assumptions, vendor quotes, exclusions, clarifications, bid strategy, and other details needed for a successful project start.
  • Monitor project costs at various stages to ensure adherence to budget.
  • Maintain updated information and communication in Buildr, with consistent follow-up on proposal statuses.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, estimating, CRM, and construction management software, including Buildr or similar platforms.
  • Ability to interpret architectural, structural, civil, and mechanical plans and specifications to develop accurate scopes, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
  • Strong analytical skills, keen attention to detail, and effective time management abilities.
  • Industrial or commercial construction experience is preferred; agricultural construction experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with co-workers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to contribute to an inclusive work environment where all employees, clients, vendors, and trade partners are welcomed and treated with respect.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, accounting, statistics, or another related field.
  • Training in estimating or project management with relevant work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working as an estimator.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Walking short distances.
  • Bending, stooping or twisting.
  • Reaching above and/or below shoulders.
  • Clear speaking and adequate hearing sufficient to communicate effectively and respond appropriately in person and/or on the telephone.
  • Requires exertion of force of 25 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and/or 5 pounds continuously to lift/carry/move objects, files and documents.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment using standard office equipment.
  • Occasional travel required.
