Job summary

Paycom is seeking a detail-oriented Estimator to prepare accurate, timely cost estimates for customer projects. You will review drawings, perform quantity takeoffs, assess risks, and prepare professional bid proposals while collaborating with Sales, Engineering, and Production.

The role requires analytical thinking, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple estimates under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Estimator to prepare accurate, timely, and competitive cost estimates for customer projects. This position is responsible for reviewing project requirements, completing material and labor takeoffs, identifying scope and cost risks, and preparing professional bid proposals.

The Estimator works closely with Sales, Engineering, Production, Purchasing, and other internal teams to ensure each estimate reflects the complete project scope and the company’s operational capabilities. The ideal candidate is analytical, organized, and comfortable managing multiple estimates and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
Estimating and Bid Preparation
  • Review project drawings, specifications, addenda, contracts, and other bid documents to determine the complete project scope.
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, freight, subcontracted services, and other project-related expenses.
  • Identify missing information, potential risks, and opportunities for cost savings.
  • Clearly document estimate assumptions, clarifications, exclusions, and qualifications.
  • Prepare accurate and professional bid proposals for customers and other stakeholders.
  • Manage multiple estimates simultaneously while meeting required bid deadlines.
  • Review bid addenda and incorporate all applicable changes into estimates and proposals.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Partner with Sales, Engineering, Production, Purchasing, and Project Management to confirm project requirements and develop accurate cost assumptions.
  • Request and evaluate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with vendors and subcontractors to support competitive pricing and reliable service.
  • Communicate with customers, contractors, and internal stakeholders to clarify project scope and resolve estimating questions.
  • Support customer and vendor negotiations by providing accurate cost information and scope clarification.
  • Participate in project handoff meetings for awarded work to ensure Operations and Project Management understand the estimated scope, assumptions, and cost structure.
Cost Analysis and Process Improvement
  • Maintain organized estimating records, pricing information, supplier quotations, and historical cost data.
  • Compare estimated costs with actual project results to identify trends and improve future estimate accuracy.
  • Assist with pricing change orders, and other project modifications.
  • Monitor changes in material, labor, freight, and subcontractor costs that may affect project pricing.
  • Recommend improvements to estimating processes, templates, cost databases, and software.
  • Support value-engineering efforts by identifying practical alternatives that reduce cost or improve project execution without compromising quality.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience in estimating, project costing, construction, manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Ability to read and interpret project drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience using estimating, takeoff, ERP, or project-management software.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Sound judgment when identifying and resolving issues related to cost, schedule, and project scope.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of estimating experience in construction, precast concrete, manufacturing, or another project-based environment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, construction methods, material requirements, labor costing, and project workflows.
  • Experience soliciting and analyzing supplier or subcontractor quotations.
  • Experience with digital takeoff or estimating software.
  • Strong planning, negotiation, and organizational skills.
