Job summary

jemgroup, based in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, is seeking an Estimator to assist in managing bids for various projects. This role requires excellent communication and estimating skills, as well as at least 3-5 years of experience in commercial construction estimating.

The Estimator will work closely with the Director of Preconstruction, leading estimating meetings and building strong relationships with clients and subcontractors to ensure successful project outcomes. Benefits include health insurance and a 401(k) plan.

Job description

As an Estimator, you will assist in or lead the administration and management of hard bid and plan/spec bids that you are assigned to. Depending on the size of the project and overall department workload, you may be solely responsible for a bid, or work as part of a team with others in the precon department. The ability to successfully work on multiple bids simultaneously is required.

Working with the Director of Preconstruction, the Estimator will provide the necessary services to carry out the requirements of estimating. The Estimator will endeavor to build and maintain a strong team relationship with Owners, Design Professionals, Municipalities, Subcontractors and Vendors. The Estimator will also assist in the buyout of projects by leading the purchasing meeting.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of commercial construction estimating experience.

Essential Functions:
  • Estimating leadership, effective communication skills, and leading estimating meetings for your projects.
  • With assistance from the Precon Coordinator:
    • Receive and assemble all bid documents
    • Set up the project on JEM's bid solicitation software
    • Select and invite subcontractors best suited for the project
    • Receive and assemble RFI's, then submit them to the architect
    • Receive and distribute Addendum's to the subcontractors
    • Receive, review, and de-scope subcontractor bids
    • Assemble the bid day estimate and complete the bid form
    • Review the bid day estimate and bid form with upper management
  • Once a project is awarded and turned over to operations, you will continue to support project managers on scope questions and profitability goals during construction. Precon continues to support operations after the project has started.
  • Provide input for the Estimating Standard Operating Procedures.
  • If requested by operations, review change orders and provide estimating support.
Project Leadership & Communication
  • The Estimator successfully conveys to the team (JEM employees, design professionals, subcontractors, suppliers, etc.) the importance of due dates and schedule goals of the projects.
  • Works to gain the architects confidence through communication.
  • Conducts internal bid review meetings, provides agendas, keeps the group focused on the issues and documents the meeting(s) in a timely manner.
  • Provides a turnover packet and explains the scopes of the subcontracts.
Client Satisfaction
  • Builds and maintains solid and positive relationships with customers.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors of Science in business, construction, engineering or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of three years of hands‑on experience estimating commercial construction projects.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Project experience in commercial office, health care, higher education, multi‑family, hospitality, retail and light industrial.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Suite products.
  • Proficient use of Bluebeam or Adobe pdf software.
  • Efficient with take‑off software (OST, Planswift).
  • Experience with competitive hard bid and Design/Build projects.
  • Knowledge of the Central PA market place is preferred but not required. Knowledge of the Eastern PA market is a plus.
  • Knowledge of on‑line bid solicitation software (Pipeline Suites, Smartbid, Building Connected).
