Position: ESOL Tutor
Location: Nichols Elementary School, Stratford, Connecticut
Department: Dual Language & Multilingual Learners/ESOL Department
Reports To: Building Principal and Department Head of Dual Language & Multilingual Learners K–12
Work Schedule: 25 hours per week; 5 hours per day
Compensation: $30.00 per hour for non-certified tutors; $35.00 per hour for certified tutors

Position Overview

Stratford Public Schools is seeking a highly motivated, culturally and linguistically responsive ESOL Tutor to support multilingual learners at Nichols Elementary School. The ESOL Tutor will work collaboratively with certified ESOL teachers, classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators to provide targeted academic and English language development support to multilingual learners.

The ESOL Tutor will support students in accessing rigorous, grade-level curriculum while developing proficiency in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The tutor will provide individual and small-group instruction, reinforce classroom and ESOL instruction, and help create an inclusive learning environment in which students' languages, cultures, identities, and experiences are recognized as assets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The ESOL Tutor will:

  • Provide individual and small-group instructional support to multilingual learners under the guidance of certified ESOL and classroom teachers.
  • Reinforce concepts and skills introduced during classroom and ESOL instruction.
  • Support the development of English proficiency across the four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Assist students in accessing grade-level academic content through appropriate linguistic scaffolds and instructional supports.
  • Provide targeted practice in academic vocabulary, oral language, reading comprehension, fluency, writing, and foundational literacy skills as appropriate.
  • Use visuals, modeling, graphic organizers, sentence frames, word banks, manipulatives, bilingual resources, and other scaffolds to make academic content comprehensible.
  • Provide structured opportunities for students to engage in academic conversations, explain their reasoning, and develop confidence using English.
  • Encourage the purposeful use of students' home languages and full linguistic repertoires as learning resources when appropriate.
  • Assist multilingual newcomers in acclimating to school routines, classroom expectations, academic language, and the U.S. school environment.
  • Support students during classroom instruction, intervention periods, centers, workshops, and other designated instructional times.
  • Reinforce classroom routines, expectations, and instructional strategies established by classroom and ESOL teachers.
  • Assist teachers with preparing instructional materials, differentiated resources, and supports for multilingual learners.
  • Observe student performance and communicate relevant information regarding student strengths, progress, engagement, and instructional needs to supervising teachers.
  • Support progress toward increased student independence by providing appropriate scaffolds while avoiding over-reliance on adult assistance.
  • Foster a welcoming environment in which multilingual learners feel valued, respected, included, and academically capable.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and follow all district policies regarding student information.
  • Collaborate professionally with classroom teachers, ESOL teachers, specialists, administrators, and other school personnel.
  • Participate in relevant school, district, and ESOL professional learning opportunities when requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the building principal or Department Head of Dual Language & Multilingual Learners K–12.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with classroom teachers, ESOL teachers, administrators, specialists, and support personnel.
  • Demonstrated patience, flexibility, professionalism, reliability, and commitment to student success.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with district policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, TESOL, bilingual education, literacy, child development, English, linguistics, or a related field.
  • Connecticut teaching certification or eligibility for certification.
  • Previous experience working with multilingual learners/English learners.
  • Experience providing small-group academic intervention, tutoring, or literacy support.
  • Knowledge of English language-development strategies.
  • Knowledge of culturally and linguistically responsive instructional practices.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency, particularly Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with multilingual newcomers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Establish positive and supportive relationships with multilingual learners.
  • Recognize students' languages, cultures, identities, and experiences as instructional assets.
  • Follow teacher-developed instructional plans and provide targeted academic reinforcement.
  • Adapt instructional supports to students' English proficiency levels and academic needs.
  • Maintain grade-level cognitive expectations while providing appropriate linguistic support.
  • Facilitate student talk, collaboration, academic language development, and productive struggle.
  • Use scaffolds strategically while encouraging increasing student independence.
  • Communicate student strengths, needs, and progress effectively with supervising educators.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Nichols Elementary School instructional team.
Work Schedule and Compensation

The ESOL Tutor position is scheduled for 25 hours per week, five hours per day, following the established school schedule.

Compensation is:

  • $35.00 per hour for certified tutors
  • $30.00 per hour for non-certified tutors
