Job summary

Palisades Park School District is seeking an ESL Teacher to support multilingual learners with standards-based ESL instruction and language development across content areas. The role involves administering WIDA assessments and analyzing progress data to guide teaching decisions.

Candidates should hold NJ ESL licensure and a Bachelor's in Elementary Education or related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment
  • Masters Degree in related area preferred

  • Administer WIDA assessments (Screener and ACCESS) in accordance with state and district guidelines.
  • Analyze student assessment data to monitor progress and inform instruction.

Job description

ESL Teacher
Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Functions
  • Provide direct English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to multilingual learners in accordance with New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) requirements.
  • Plan and deliver standards-based instruction that supports students’ English language development in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the varying English proficiency levels and academic needs of multilingual learners.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support language development across all content areas.
  • Develop and implement instructional strategies that promote academic achievement while fostering English language acquisition.
  • Administer WIDA assessments, including the WIDA Screener and ACCESS for ELLs, in accordance with state and district guidelines.
  • Analyze student assessment data to monitor progress, inform instruction, and support educational decision‑making.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including language proficiency data, progress monitoring, and required state documentation.
  • Participate in the identification, placement, and annual review of multilingual learners in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Collaborate with Child Study Teams, intervention teams, and other educational professionals to support multilingual learners’ academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress, program services, and educational opportunities, utilizing translation and interpretation services when appropriate.
  • Participate in parent‑teacher conferences, multilingual family engagement events, and other school activities.
  • Serve as a resource to staff regarding effective instructional practices and accommodations for multilingual learners.
  • Assist classroom teachers in implementing culturally responsive teaching practices and language supports within general education classrooms.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, professional development, and district initiatives.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.
