Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and another language preferred; ability to speak basic Spanish preferred.
  • Related teaching experience and certification in teaching English as a Second Language required (ESL Endorsement, TESOL/TEFL certificate); Nebraska teaching certificate preferred.
  • State of Nebraska teaching certificate with public school teaching experience preferred.
  • Ability to accommodate learning needs of diverse populations.
  • Outstanding personal/interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with technology in facilitating instruction.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.

Responsibilities

  • Teach ESL to groups of parents with varying English proficiency.
  • Collaborate with the Director to activate long-term strategies for parent involvement in children’s education.
  • Provide ESL instruction and encourage learning activities outside the classroom.
  • Assess and track language and literacy levels of students.
  • Create interactive, culturally sensitive curricula for learners at different levels.
  • Promote attendance and punctuality and maintain accurate attendance records, rosters, and data.

Two part-time positions | 0.50 FTE (20 hrs/week) and 0.40 FTE (16 hrs/week) | Located at the Learning Community Center of South Omaha (24th & M)



Job Duties

The ESL Instructor at the Learning Community Center of South Omaha is primarily responsible for teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) to groups of parents with varying levels of English proficiency and literacy. The ESL Instructor works in collaboration with the Director of the Learning Community Center to activate and support long-term strategies focused on working with parents to better support their children’s education.



  • Provides instruction in ESL, and encourages parents to expand learning activities for themselves and their children outside of the classroom.

  • Assesses and tracks students’ levels of language and literacy.

  • Creates interactive curriculum that is culturally sensitive, respectful, and accessible to learners of varying levels.

  • Promotes attendance and punctuality; motivates students to come on time and regularly to class as a requirement for program participation. Uses on-line database to accurately track attendance in real time and add notes and updates rosters and data within various programs, including Remind, Burlington English, etc.

  • Actively engages students by running a dynamic and student-centered, student-driven classroom.

  • Correlates and ties back student learning to their child’s learning, so that parents are increasingly successful in supporting their child’s education at home.

  • On occasion, when Omaha Public Schools is not in session, plans and executes interactive parent/child activities with parent participants and their children. During the summer, develops and executes classes, field trips, and events geared toward families.
