General Purpose
The Adjunct ESL Instructor will teach English as a Second Language classes and has the desire to work in a positive manner with students, bringing energy and fresh ideas into the classroom. The instructor is comfortable teaching beginner through advanced (CEFR A1 - C2) levels of English and will assess the students throughout the program.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Create an engaging classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest level of students.
- Evaluate student progress through required number of assignments, quizzes, and course exams, and record all grades by deadlines.
- Complete a minimum of 2 hours of professional development per term and provide documentation to MCC Administration.
- Prepare for assigned classes and post session agenda (lesson plans) on course D2L/Brightspace pages.
- Teach assigned classes in accordance with course goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes.
- Conduct continuous evaluation of curriculum, instructional materials, and classroom activities.
- Maintain accurate student records, including grades and attendance.
- Collaborate with other instructors and attend all in-service meetings.
- Provide feedback on course curriculum, methods, and materials.
- Teach fewer than 30 hours a week.
- Perform other duties assigned.

- Ability to analyze curriculum effectiveness using anecdotal and quantitative data.
- Deep understanding of communicative approach to language teaching.
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills, with proven writing ability.

Education and/or Experience
- To teach Beginner to Advanced courses, the Adjunct Instructor must have a Bachelor’s degree in TESOL or linguistics OR a closely related field (e.g., English) with TESOL/TESL/TEFL or CELTA certification. At least 2 years’ experience teaching ESL courses to adults.
- To teach Professional English courses and/or English for Academic Purposes courses, must have an M.A. in in TESOL or linguistics or a closely related field (e.g., English) with TESOL/TESL/TEFL or CELTA certification. At least 2 years’ experience teaching ESL courses to adults, and knowledge of US higher education and business workplaces.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Work Schedule
Monday/Wednesday and/or Tuesday/Thursday 9:30am - 2:30pm
