Job summary

Wake Technical Community College is seeking adjunct ESL instructors for the College and Career Readiness Division (CCR). Openings may not exist at present, but selected candidates may be contacted as needed.

Instructors will teach ESL with emphasis on preparing students for college and careers, using LMS platforms for online instruction and in-person sessions. Strong communication and technology skills required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required from an accredited university.
• At least 6 months ESL teaching experience in a classroom or 3 months with an ESL certificate.
• Must have native-like fluency in English.
• Must develop and teach original lesson plans incorporating contextualized instruction and technology.

Responsibilities

• Assess student needs and create daily ESL lesson plans.
• Deliver instruction via LMS platforms and in seated/online formats.
• Manage attendance, communicate with students and staff, and ensure access to classes.
• Facilitate community building and student engagement through dynamic activities.
• Collaborate with CCR staff to support transitioning students into college and careers.

Job description

Wake Technical Community College is seeking to expand our pool of adjunct faculty to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in the College and Career Readiness Division (CCR). Openings for these positions may not exist at the present time; however upon review of your qualifications, you may be contacted directly by the department on an as needed basis.

• Assesses student needs
• Creates and executes daily lesson plans based on the federal English Language Proficiency Standards, ESL curriculum, current research based ESL methodologies and student needs to provide interactive, contextualized instruction in preparing students to transition to college and careers
• Utilizes various learning management system (LMS) platforms for delivery of virtual instruction. Learns and implements technology to enhance instruction in seated and online environments
• Performs routine administrative functions of the classroom including enforcing student attendance policy, ensuring accurate attendance documentation, communicating regularly with students, staff and supervisor and ensuring students access to virtual and seated classes, etc.

Facilitates community building in virtual and/or seated instruction through collaborative learning, open dialogue, communicative activities, student participation/engagement and student retention activities, including continuous contact with students through email, texts and phone calls.

Participates in scheduled Professional Development and staff meetings.

Collaborates with Instructional Program Specialists and College & Career Readiness Staff to identify students needing additional support and assist eligible students who are transitioning into college and careers.

Adheres to all policies of the site at which the ESL classes are held, unless in direct conflict with College policies.

• Working knowledge of computers, especially use of the internet and Microsoft Office

Requirements

• Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
• Requires at least 6 months of ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching experience in a classroom OR 3 months adult teaching experience in a classroom with an ESL certificate from an accredited institution of higher education
• Must have native-like fluency in English
• Must be able to develop and teach original lesson plans for a classroom setting that incorporate contextualized instruction, real-life/authentic materials and technology
• Requires digital literacy, especially in the use of the internet, technology as a teaching tool, and Microsoft Office. Must be able to incorporate technology such as Powerpoint, LCD projectors, iPads, Tablets and/or internet based activities into the classroom

Preferences

• Prefer ESL, ESOL or TESOL Certificate
• Prefer completion of online teaching training and/or Online Teaching Certificate with ESL experience
• Prefer experience teaching adults in a community college setting
