As the Group Leader for the Generator Site Interface Group within Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) Repository Science and Operations (RSO) Division, the successful candidate will provide leadership and oversight for a technically diverse portfolio supporting the Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) and the National Transuranic (TRU) Program. The group consists of two primary teams: Difficult Waste Technologies, which provides technical expertise and solutions for challenging TRU waste streams to support compliant disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP); and the TRU Waste Technical Project, which provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support to CBFO, including waste characterization reviews, development of DOE directives and CBFO procedures, safety basis and environmental regulatory support, corrective actions, and subject matter expertise.
The Group Leader also oversees the Technical Assistance Program, which provides technical support to TRU waste generator sites across the DOE complex to facilitate the characterization, packaging, certification, and eventual disposal of waste at WIPP, as well as Acceptable Knowledge (AK) activities for select waste streams. These activities require coordination of multidisciplinary technical expertise and effective engagement with DOE, generator sites, WIPP contractors, and other stakeholders.
Reporting directly to the RSO Division Leader, the Group Leader will partner with Team Leads and the RSO leadership team to provide strategic, technical, operational, and programmatic direction for the group. Responsibilities include leading and developing staff; establishing priorities and allocating resources; managing scope, schedules, and budgets; ensuring safe, secure, and compliant execution of work; maintaining technical capability and quality; resolving technical and programmatic issues; and fostering effective relationships across LANL, CBFO, WIPP contractors, and the broader National TRU Program. The position requires strong technical leadership, sound judgment, effective communication, and a commitment to advancing LANL's national security mission.
Demonstrated experience leading large, technically focused organizations, with responsibility for both personnel and budget management. Proven track record in guiding strategic and operational planning, delivering work products associated with complex projects, and championing successful organizational outcomes. Well-versed in employee development, including mentoring, team building, and conflict resolution.
Proven record of effective technical leadership capabilities, with an emphasis on, program development, and the application of employee development tools. Demonstrated advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with federal and state environmental and waste-management regulations, policies, and procedures. Skilled in integrating and implementing principles from multiple management systems, including safety, security, quality, configuration management, and conduct of operations. Recognized for excellent technical writing skills.
Proven experience and demonstrated expertise in leading waste-related compliance activities, evaluating alternative solutions, and recommending effective solutions to complex problems impacting programs and administrative operations. Skilled in prioritizing workplace safety and quality through proactive engagement with employees and stakeholders, implementation of robust safety programs, and cultivation of a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring regulatory compliance, employee well-being, and sustained operational excellence.
Demonstrated exceptional communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with staff, LANL organizations, senior management, internal clients, external clients (including DOE Office of Environmental Management and the National Nuclear Security Administration), regulators, industry partners, community members, and other key stakeholders. Recognized for an ability to influence perspectives and achieve consensus in sensitive or high-stakes situations, while preserving trust and maintaining strong collaborative relationships.
This position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
This position is based in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The RSO Division, located in Carlsbad, is part of the Associate Directorate for Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ALDESHQ) at LANL.
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
