Job summary

Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Springfield, OR is seeking a dedicated Veterinary Assistant to support 13 veterinarians in our 24/7 ER practice. This role includes assisting in exams, radiography, and routine care to ensure pet safety and comfort.

The position requires basic veterinary knowledge, the ability to handle distressed pets, and strong communication with clients. Pay is $20–$25 per hour plus benefits; flexible shifts include days and overnights.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• NAVTA-approved Veterinary Assistant program certificate preferred.
• One year of experience in a pet care setting preferred.
• Broad knowledge of animal science.
• Basic knowledge of pharmacology.
• Proficiency with MS Outlook/Word and vet internet resources.
• Good written and verbal communication; customer-oriented approach.
• Basic math for drug and fluid dosages.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare exam rooms and equipment; clean and disinfect between appointments.
• Obtain patient information and histories; document and update records.
• Calm and restrain pets during procedures.
• Educate owners on pet care and post-procedure instructions.
• Monitor vital signs and recovery after procedures.
• Assist in basic health checks and routine laboratory tasks.
• Administer medications and fill prescriptions under supervision.
• Maintain patient care quality and confidentiality; support team collaboration.
• Work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
