E.R. Technician - White Plains, NY

Emergency Department

Full Time

Night

7P-7A, 13 shifts per schedule, Mon-Sun alternating weekends and holidays

The role of the ER technician requires partnering with the healthcare team (Registered Nurse, Provider, Mid-level Provider) to provide exceptional care and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Under the direction of the RN, the ER Technician provides both direct and indirect patient care. The ER technician also assists in managing behavioral health patients and provides one-to-one observation as needed. Additionally, the ER technician participates in infection control protocols for diseases such as Ebola and plays a key role in departmental quality metrics, including blood collection turnaround times, length of stay, and throughput.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to WPH Performance Standards, Policies, and Behaviors.
  • Respect and incorporate patient's rights into practice.
  • Deliver exceptional patient care and service with each interaction.
  • Perform duties including vital signs, intake/output monitoring, activities of daily living, dressing changes, ophthalmology and gynecological exam setup, patient transportation, orthopedic equipment setup, simple tracheostomy care, and urinary drainage maintenance.
  • Obtain blood specimens via venipuncture, label specimens appropriately, and perform other collection techniques as ordered.
  • Place patients on cardiac monitors and obtain 12-lead EKGs within 10 minutes of arrival for patients meeting specific criteria.
  • Follow infection control procedures.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement Initiatives.
  • Use appropriate decision-making steps, including recognition and prioritization of patient and unit issues.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Complete required competencies and attend mandatory in-services and staff meetings.
  • Practice cost containment strategies.
  • Perform phlebotomy and transport patients as needed.
  • Maintain stock and supplies in patient care areas and carts for efficient, safe care.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Communicate patient clinical status or safety concerns with providers and nurses.
  • Ensure the environment complies with regulatory standards.
  • Work effectively with patients of all ages.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency
  • Previous patient care experience required
  • Enrolled in nursing or other health-related programs preferred
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association required
  • Competency in Phlebotomy
  • Complete de-escalation training within 1 year of hire or transfer to ER (effective June 25, 2021)
  • Successful completion of hands-on/unit orientation/Nursing Technician classes as assigned

  • Potential exposure to chemicals; SDS information available via hospital resources.

  • Concentrate on fine details despite interruptions; understand related concepts and manage multiple tasks throughout the day.
  • Ability to detect objects at various distances and sounds amidst background noise.
