Job summary

UNM Hospital's Emergency Department - Lomas is seeking an EMT/ER support role to assist in nursing care, wound care and patient safety across neonatal to geriatric age groups. You will help maintain a safe environment, stock patient care areas and support physicians and nurses in procedures.

The position requires at least 1 year of related experience, a high school diploma or GED, and credentials such as CPR/BLS and EMT Intermediate.

Qualifications

  • High School or GED Equivalent.
  • Essential: 1 year directly related experience.
  • Nonessential: bilingual English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni or Navajo with 1 year related experience.
  • Credentials: CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days; EMT Intermediate License.
  • Physical: Heavy Work – frequent heavy lifting as described; endurances as required.
  • Working conditions: Hazardous materials PPE and TB testing as required.

Responsibilities

  • PATIENT CARE - Clean patient care rooms, equipment and instruments; report equipment problems; order and store supplies; maintain PAR levels.
  • PATIENT CARE - Assist nursing staff/physicians in treatment procedures; perform routine procedures.
  • PATIENT CARE - Identify and assess clinical situations beyond scope; notify nurse/physician.
  • PATIENT CARE - Provide oxygen therapy, IV setup, catheterization, gastric lavage, suctioning; monitor patients under supervision.
  • TRANSPORT - Transport patients and specimens; move charts and materials as needed.
  • RECORDS & SUPPORT - Maintain records; run errands; provide support duties.
  • EQUIPMENT - Assist with equipment maintenance, calibration and data collection.
  • PATIENT SAFETY - Follow safety policies; participate in continuous quality improvement.
  • CUSTOMER RELATIONS - Build rapport with patients, visitors, physicians and staff.

Position Summary: Assist in the nursing care of patients in the Emergency Center. Provides wound care and splints as required. Provide a safe, clean environment and stocks patient care areas. Ensures adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Detailed Responsibilities:

  • PATIENT CARE - Clean patient care rooms, equipment and instruments; report equipment problems; order and store supplies; maintain appropriate PAR levels
  • PATIENT CARE - Assist nursing staff/physicians in complicated treatment procedures; perform routine treatment procedures
  • PATIENT CARE - Identify and assess clinical situations beyond their scope and promptly notifies a nurse and/or physician
  • PATIENT CARE - Provide oxygen therapy, I.V. setup, catheterization, gastric lavage, suctioning; apply cardiac monitor and basic assessments under the supervision of RN or attending physician as requested
  • TRANSPORT - Transport patients, collect, label and transport specimens, equipment, supplies, charts and materials to include arterial blood gas specimens
  • TRANSPORT - Transport patients to other units or to in-patient testing areas
  • RECORDS & SUPPORT - Maintain record keeping and filing system; make photocopies; run errands; perform other support duties as assigned
  • PERFORM - Perform dispatch duties as required
  • PATIENT CARE - Provide direct clinical services to patients including screening and identification, rehabilitative, and counseling services as directed
  • EQUIPMENT - Assist with the provision of administrative support in regards to equipment maintenance, calibration and statistical data compilation
  • POLICY & PROCEDURE - Follow established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards
  • CUSTOMER RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospitals employees
  • ASSIST - Assist the nurse in the management of observation unit patients
  • WOUND CARE - Complete wound care process according to medical protocol under the direct supervision of RN or physician
  • DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Physical Conditions: Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
