Job summary

The City of Houston is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator in the Transportation & Drainage Operations/Street Maintenance division. You will operate a range of heavy equipment and power tools to perform skilled/manual tasks, transport materials, and assist with infrastructure repairs, paint, and signage projects.

Reports and records are maintained for each assignment, using a data-tracking system. Working hours are Monday–Thursday, 6:30am–4:30pm, with the potential for shift changes.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent with training in operation of construction equipment.
• Six (6) months of experience with power tools or heavy equipment.
• Valid Texas driver’s license; may require Class A or B CDL depending on equipment.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment to perform skilled/manual tasks and transport materials, personnel, and supplies.
• Inspect vehicles and equipment; maintain, clean, and service tools and facilities.
• Prepare and maintain reports on assignments, service calls, and maintenance using a data tracking system.
• May act as a lead on a crew and coordinate/monitor work assignments and personnel.

Description Of Duties/Essential Functions

Safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment and power tools to perform a series of skilled/manual activities and tasks and/or to transport materials, personnel, and supplies to complete work assignments. Operates heavy equipment such as (Dump Trucks, 5/10 Ton Roller, Asphalt Distributor Truck, Concrete Mixer Truck, Concrete Saw, Flusher with tanker endorsement, F.E. Loader, Boom Truck, Herb. Spray Truck, Lowboy, Pothole Patcher, Slope Mower, Bulldozer, Excavator Backhoe, Flatbed, Gradall, Sweeper, Vac*Con and Bucket Truck) to transport equipment and/ or materials to and from work sites. Operates power tools, uses hand tools and performs a variety of skilled/manual tasks and activities, i.e. spraying, landscape, moving furniture, roofing, painting, infrastructure repairs, mowing, pouring concrete or asphalt, fabricating and installing traffic signs, installing pavement markings, repairing traffic signal infrastructure, etc. May assist with the cleaning and repair of sewer mains. Maintains, cleans, and services equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observe and follow safety procedures and precautions at the worksite. May investigate and respond to complaints. Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records. Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls and/or maintenance and repairs of equipment and tools utilizing a data tracking system. May act as a lead on a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position routine requires stooping, bending, and/or lifting of items of 30 - 80 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the construction equipment.

Experience Requirements

Six (6) months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required. (Heavy Equipment)

License Requirements

Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving. May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate.

PREFERENCES

Preferences shall be given to eligible candidates with a CDL or experience in operating Bergkamp, Skid loader, Dump Truck, Roller, Patcher Truck, Front end loader, Asphalt Distributor Truck, Sweeper and various other pieces of equipment.
