The equipment technician performs entry-level skilled work in the maintenance and repair of light vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

MoDOT will assign candidates to entry-level, intermediate, or senior levels based on skills and experience. What You’ll Do
  • Maintain and perform basic repairs on automobiles, trucks, tractors, loaders, motor graders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Inspect, service, repair, and overhaul transmissions, engines, clutches, drivelines, differentials, axles, and ignition systems; repair hydraulic controls; tune motors; dismantle and reassemble compressors, pumps, cylinders, etc.
  • Inspect, repair, and overhaul automotive components such as alternators, distributors, and starters.
  • Complete mandated fleet inspections, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and safety regulations.
  • May weld, modify equipment, and fabricate parts.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, or Automotive Technology, OR
  • Completion of a post-secondary technical training program (at least 30 credit hours or one year) plus one year of automotive or heavy equipment repair experience, OR
  • Two years of automotive or heavy equipment repair experience.
  • Passing score on the written CDL exam prior to hire; must pass driving test with tanker endorsement, no restrictions, within 60 days.
  • Valid vehicle inspection license within 60 days of hire.
  • Complete work simulation and medical-physical exams.
Special Working Conditions
  • Requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
  • Exposure to hazards, safety risks, and adverse environments.
  • May operate vehicles for snow plowing and ice control.
