Equipment Repair Technician

Location: Virginia Department of Transportation - Hampton Shop, 150 E. St. Hampton, VA 23661 (24/7 Operation)

Status: Full-Time Employee

Pre‑Employment Requirements:

• Fingerprint based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) will be conducted prior to employment.
• Drug Screening will be conducted prior to employment.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Virginia Driver's License in good standing.

Scope of Work: U.S. Facilities, Inc., a consolidated facility management service company, is seeking a proven industry professional experienced Equipment Repair Technician to work on one of our projects in Southeast Virginia. This role will diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain motorized and mechanical construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive equipment of all types and in varied locations. Responsibilities include:

• Diagnose vehicle and equipment failures using electronic testing equipment, repair manuals and online resources; perform repairs and overhauls; recommend outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
• Perform Virginia State Police inspections under the guidelines of the Virginia State Police inspection program.
• Execute preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment according to the PM schedule and guidelines; make repairs as needed.
• Design, fabricate, modify and weld components to repair, rebuild or replace parts.
• Prepare equipment for emergency operations and perform on‑road repairs to reduce downtime.
• Maintain required maintenance and repair documentation, close out work orders, enter time and leave data, and prepare parts requests.
• Serve as Backup Fuel Site Manager: receive fuel deliveries, perform monthly fuel site inspections, maintain paperwork per client policies; maintain AFMP Class C Underground Storage Tank Operator and Fire Extinguisher certification.
• Any other duties as assigned by a supervisor and/or USF Senior Project Manager.

Essential Emergency Operations: The client is an emergency operations agency. This job is essential to emergency response operations and will be required to work in critical situations such as inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. VDOT/Project Management will determine when essential positions are required.

Qualifications:

Education

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Vocational or technical training in automotive and equipment repair and diagnostics preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education. Demonstrated equivalent required.

Experience / Skill Sets

• Minimum Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT medical card. Preferred or demonstrated ability to obtain within 11 months of hire.
• Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification preferred or demonstrated ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
• Virginia State Police Equipment Inspection License or demonstrated ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• AFMP Class C Underground Storage Tank Operator and Fire Extinguisher Certification or demonstrated ability to obtain within 11 months of hire.
• ASE certifications or demonstrated equivalent highly preferred.
• Flexible schedule (24/7/365 operating environment).
• Knowledge of general shop procedures.
• Knowledge of diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to operate various types of light, medium and heavy‑duty trucks, equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
• Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations; skilled in the use of cutting and welding equipment.
• Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
• Ability to read and comprehend service and equipment repair manuals, gauges and testing devices.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Work Conditions

• 90‑day probation period.

• Work may occur outside along interstate highways requiring safety precautions with electricity and traffic.

• The work environment is informal, team‑ and autonomy‑oriented, with routine tasks and variable pace and pressure.
• Weekend, evening, and overtime work may be required. Standing for prolonged periods, walking, lifting, carrying, frequent reaching, kneeling, climbing, bending, twisting, crouching, and balancing can be expected.

NOTE: This position is designed as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. VDOT/Project Management will determine when essential positions are required.
