Job summary

VDOT is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician to diagnose, repair, inspect, and maintain a broad range of motorized and mechanical equipment across construction, highway maintenance, grounds, and automotive sectors. You will diagnose failures, perform on-site repairs, and manage documentation for work orders.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, safety inspections per Virginia State Police guidelines, welding and fabrication, and maintaining compliance with DOT/VDOT policies.

Qualifications

• Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using testing equipment, manuals and online resources.
• Perform repairs and overhauls on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment including engines, transmissions and hydraulics.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare required paperwork and work orders.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Ability to obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair using testing equipment and manuals; refer major repairs when needed.
• Prepare equipment for emergency operations and perform on-the-road repairs to reduce downtime.
• Prepare, process and close-out work orders in computer systems; manage time and leave entries.
• Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, driveline, electrical, fuel injection, A/C, hydraulic and structural components.
• Perform preventive maintenance according to PM schedule; consider outsourcing when appropriate.
• Conduct Virginia State inspections under VSP guidelines.
• Design, fabricate, modify and weld components for repair or replacement.
