Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a skilled automotive maintenance technician to diagnose, repair, inspect, and maintain construction and highway equipment across multiple locations. You will perform engine and electrical repairs, preventive maintenance, and safety inspections under Virginia State Police guidelines.

CDL/DOT compliance and accurate record keeping are required. You will work with diesel and gasoline trucks and related machinery, using electronic testers and welding

Qualifications

• Independently perform major repairs on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
• Maintain accurate records and reports.
• Obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain thereafter.
• Obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months and maintain thereafter.
• Operate various types of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks safely and efficiently.
• Perform heavy manual labor.
• Read and comprehend service and repair manuals, gauges, and testing devices.
• Knowledge of cutting, welding and fabrication operations.
• Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
• Safety shoes required.
• Proficient with computers and advanced diagnostic equipment.

Responsibilities

• Diagnosis and repair: diagnose vehicle or asset failures using testing equipment and manuals; outsource major repairs when needed.
• Emergency Operations: prepare equipment for emergencies and perform on-the-road repairs to reduce downtime.
• Information Processing and Paperwork: prepare work orders, process paperwork, and track maintenance activities.
• Perform Repair Work: overhaul engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems on trucks and equipment.
• Preventive Maintenance: conduct PMs per schedule and address deficiencies.
• Virginia State Inspections: perform safety inspections under Virginia State Police guidelines.
• Welding Repair and Fabrication: design, fabricate, modify and weld components for repairs.
