Qualifications

Starting Salary Range: $22.80 - $27.36/hour, DOQ Closing Date:Open Until Filled

Summary/Objective

The Equipment Operator maintains City infrastructure and public services while functioning as a member of maintenance teams. This position is required to perform special projects using heavy equipment which requires reviewing the project, analyzing the appropriate method of completing the project and developing a time schedule.

Essential Functions

Performs repairs, construction, installation, and maintenance duties.

  • Operates a variety of equipment including but not limited to bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, graders, skid steer loaders, trenchers, pipe-tapping machines, sewer jet trucks, sewer line rapid assessment tools (SLRAT), closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, and loaders as dependent upon division and project need; operates all equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Performs repair, installation, construction, and maintenance duties related to roadways, bridges, drainage systems, sanitary sewer systems, and other public infrastructure maintained by the department.
  • Documents and produces accurate reports, asset data, and field observations as required. Enters data into databases in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP) and industry standards.
  • Transports equipment and material to work sites, load and unload equipment and materials.
  • Checks work sites for potential hazards; determine precautions for safe equipment operation. Assembles and sets up appropriate traffic control at work sites as required by projects.
  • Completes seasonal and emergency maintenance work as required

Cleans and Maintains Equipment.

  • Washes equipment, cleans inside of equipment, inspects equipment for damage, and conducts repairs and/or preventative maintenance as required. Ensure the replacement f equipment as required.

Performs additional support duties as required.

  • May be required act as interim Crewleader in the event that the Crewleader is absent.
  • Manages work-related stress that may result of potentially dissatisfied customers or citizens.
  • May work in and around high traffic areas, manholes, confined spaces, trenches and excretory products, dependent upon division.
  • Attends all required trainings and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • High school education or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience operating heavy equipment and knowledge of proper preventative maintenance for heavy equipment. In lieu of years of experience, internal candidates can demonstrate proficiency through completion of a field competency test.
  • Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with Airbrakes and Tanker endorsement.
  • Wastewater Section-specific: National Associate of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) Certifications in Pipeline Assessment (PACP) or must be able to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • CPR or First Aid Training.
  • Street, Fleet, and Stormwater Section-specific: LTAP Training (e.g., Asphalt Road & Street Maintenance, Concrete Road & Street Maintenance, Gravel Road and Street Maintenance); Confined Space Training; Open Trench Safety Training; and APWA Winter Operator Training.

  • Education Reimbursement, Professional Development. Certifications/Licensure - The City will reimburse up to $8,000 per calendar year for tuition and fees. Professional Development funds are based on department budget. Certification/licensure may be reimbursed by the City.
