The Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM), Chief Engineer's Office is seeking to fill an Equipment Operator Trainer position based in Kapolei. Under the general direction of the Driver Improvement Coordinator II, this position plans, develops, organizes, maintains records, and conducts certified training program in heavy construction equipment maintenance and operation, and special and new equipment certification program for the Department and other City agencies.

What You Will Do
  • Plan, develop, organize, and maintain records for certified training programs in heavy construction equipment maintenance and operation.
  • Conduct heavy construction equipment operator certified training to include educational classes and hands‑on training.
  • Establish and maintain training timetable and keep supervisor informed of progress, evaluation, and accomplishments. Grade trainees during course, determine approximate number of training hours required, and certify trainee as qualified to operate specific equipment.
  • Assist in coordinating with supervisors and others for availability of trainees, equipment, classroom, training area and specific jobs for the on-the-job training phase.
  • Review training programs and make necessary changes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Special Working Conditions
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during civil defense emergencies.

Actual salary will be commensurate with applicable experience, pending approval.

Education Requirement

Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

Experience Requirement
  1. Successful completion of an approved construction equipment operator apprenticeship training program;
  2. Equivalent training and/or experience of comparable scope, which shall have demonstrated proficiency in the operation of various types and sizes of construction equipment, including cranes, large crawler‑mounted bulldozers, graders, and backhoe and loader units.
License/Certificate Requirement

Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license reflecting the appropriate commercial driver’s license (CDL) with proper endorsements, as applicable; a current State Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination certificate; and a current Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator.

Current Vacancy Requires
  1. At the time of application:
    • Valid CDL Class A or B; and
    • Current State DOT medical examination certificate.
  2. Prior to appointment:
    • Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator.
  3. Prior to completion of probation:
    • American Red Cross First Aid Certificate or equivalent.
