Job objective

Responsible for vehicle operations used in the collection of refuse and yard waste. Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work and operates various equipment for solid waste collection.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

1. Drive collection vehicle over designated routes, pick up waste containers (including recyclables or yard waste), deposit into the vehicle, and return containers to the prescribed area. Operate truck mechanisms for loading, compressing, and dumping refuse. Make special collections as assigned.
2. Maintain communication with the office via radio or other means to report variances or issues.
3. Conduct daily inspections of vehicle, including tire pressures, fluid levels, and critical parts; wash and perform routine maintenance such as greasing, lubricating, oil changes, and checking antifreeze.
4. Observe surroundings for safety, regulate traffic in hazardous conditions, and ensure safety for personnel and the public.
5. Drive to landfill or compost facility and unload collection vehicle.
6. Operate leaf vacuum truck during Fall and Winter seasons if required.
7. Follow safety and security standards, attend training, and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
8. Participate in job rotation and cross-training as needed.
