JOB SUMMARY: The City of Cleveland Heights is seeking an Equipment Operator to drive heavy-duty trucks and operate moderately complex construction/maintenance equipment for the Parks and Properties Division. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Examples of Duties

  • The safe operation of a variety of moderately complex heavy equipment including combination vehicles, rollers, tool cat, brush mower, skid steer loader, backhoe, and front-end loader.
  • Transportation of materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites; hauling sand, rock, shell, asphalt, gravel, sludge, and other bulky, heavy items and substances.
  • Operating construction/maintenance equipment, pay loaders, truck mounted claw for loading and lifting in construction and maintenance activities; and loader tractors for loading and excavating, and industrial/agricultural tractors for cutting grass and clearing land.
  • Performing minor maintenance and servicing on vehicle/equipment being operated to include checking tire air pressure, motor oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel, and bleeding brake air tanks where require; visually checks vehicle/equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and the end of the work day; assures that vehicle is properly equipped, serviced and cleaned
  • Exercising extreme care while operating equipment, including watching out for children, animals, low hanging limbs, utility lines, trees, fences, and parked vehicles; observing safety rules and obeying traffic laws.
  • Maintaining accurate records and keeping reports of work performed.
  • Responsible for installing Temporary Traffic Control operations as needed to protect operator, equipment and motorists, while maintaining a safe work zone.
  • Be available for emergency calls when needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality
  • Duties may also include general maintenance in parks and properties, including cutting grass, trimming trees, string trimming, etcetera.

Education And/Or Experience

High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Requirements

A valid Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is needed for this position.

The applicant should have knowledge of or the ability to learn:

  • Methods, practices, materials, and equipment used in maintenance, construction, and repair work.
  • Traffic laws, occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions
  • Use and care of hand and power tools and equipment related to assigned areas.
  • Records keeping, report writing, and related administrative procedures.
  • Variety of hand and power tools
  • Safe work practices

The applicant should be skilled in the operation of heavy trucks and/or motorized construction/maintenance equipment or the ability to learn the operation of equipment listed in the job summary and/or equipment that may be acquired in the future.

The Applicant Should Have The Ability To

  • Perform heavy manual labor as required
  • Demonstrate knowledge on the safety of tools, machinery and/or equipment used in their workplace
  • Climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.
  • Walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work outdoors under varying temperatures, inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions.
  • Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
