Job summary

STG Inc, a Calista Brice subsidiary delivering infrastructure projects across Alaska, seeks an Equipment Operator for Prince of Wales Island, AK. You will operate heavy equipment, perform maintenance, prepare sites, and support safe, efficient civil construction work in challenging Alaskan conditions.

What can you expect?

As the Equipment Operator, you will work onsite on the Prince of Wales Island, AK and will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating a variety of heavy construction equipment in support of civil construction projects throughout Alaska. Working as part of an integrated construction crew, this position performs equipment operation, preventative maintenance, site preparation, and general construction activities while helping ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements. The role requires sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to work in rural locations and challenging Alaskan conditions while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and quality.

Please note that this position is reserved exclusively for local hires in Prince of Wales, AK, and housing accommodations will not be provided in this area.

How will you do it?
  • Operate heavy construction equipment and perform related construction work for extended hours in rural locations and adverse weather conditions to support project schedules and operational requirements.
  • Demonstrate competency in reading grade stakes, basic plans, or work instructions related to equipment operation.
  • Assist with site preparation activities, including grading, trenching, loading/unloading materials, and cleanup as required.
  • Operate equipment in close proximity to personnel, utilities, structures, and active operations while maintaining situational awareness.
  • Work collaboratively with multiple construction trades to support efficient and safe project execution.
  • Follow direction from the Project Foreman and other senior personnel, while demonstrating initiative, accountability, and consistent productivity on the jobsite.
  • Safely operate and assist with the basic maintenance of heavy equipment, including but not limited to excavators, dump trucks, dozers, loaders, telehandlers, graders, and skid steers.
  • Conduct daily pre-use and post-use inspections of assigned equipment and accurately report equipment condition, deficiencies, or required repairs.
  • Track and report equipment usage, including operating hours and mileage, in accordance with company procedures.
  • Apply a versatile construction skill set to assist other trades as needed to meet changing project requirements.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance in accordance with project schedules.
  • Perform physical labor requiring frequent use of arms and legs and full-body movement, including climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials in active construction environments.
  • Work as a team player, demonstrating professionalism, respect, and cooperation with coworkers, supervisors, and project partners.
  • Adapt to changing work scopes, schedules, and jobsite conditions while maintaining productivity and safety standards.
  • Maintain a constant state of alertness and perform all duties in a safe manner, following company safety policies and procedures.
  • Actively seek and participate in training, certification, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform tasks associated with the preventative maintenance program, including lubrication, cleaning, fluid sampling, replenishing fluids, and inspecting components for proper operation, damage, or wear; assist with repairs or component replacement as required.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner and in the best interest of the Company while on the job or representing STG.
  • Promptly report any incident, unsafe condition, or activity that may impact the Company’s ability to operate safely, ethically, or profitably to the Company Risk Manager or designated supervisor.
  • Comply with all federal, state, client, and company safety regulations, including site-specific safety plans and hazard analyses.
  • Serve as a team member and assist with mentoring or supporting less experienced laborers as directed.
  • Perform shared cooking and cleaning responsibilities as necessary while working in field quarters.
  • Submit required reports, timekeeping, inspection forms, and other documentation to Project Management and Accounting in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain all certifications, licenses, and qualifications required by law, regulation, or Company policy.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper operation of heavy construction equipment and related safety practices.
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, methods, terminology, and standard practices used in the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of basic preventative maintenance principles for heavy equipment, including inspections, lubrication, and fluid checks.
  • Knowledge of jobsite safety requirements, including hazard recognition, PPE use, and safe work practices in extreme weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment controls relevant to construction and equipment operations.
  • Skill in organizing work tasks, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines, and managing time effectively.
  • Skill in operating multiple types of heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, haul trucks, graders, and skid-steers.
  • Skill in performing accurate equipment inspections and completing required logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with supervisors, spotters, and crew members on active jobsites.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, follow direction from supervisors, maintain attention to detail, comply with work rules, and adhere to project schedules.
  • Ability to remain productive and focused while working under pressure and in fast paced environments.
