Job summary

Greenwood County is seeking a full-time Solid Waste Disposal operator at the County Landfill to operate and perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and motor graders. You will spread, compact, and cover waste, dig trenches, and grade soil while following set procedures under supervision.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED and at least 1 year of heavy equipment operation experience, plus a valid SC CDL with endorsements and SCDHEC Landfill

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• At least 1 year of heavy equipment operation experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment (bulldozers, loaders, graders, cranes) to spread, compact, and cover waste.
• Perform daily cover applications to control odors and pests and ensure proper site coverage.
• Maintain site by grading roads, drainage ditches, and stormwater controls.
• Direct traffic and inspect loads for prohibited or hazardous materials at dumping areas.
• Conduct pre- and post-shift safety inspections and perform minor maintenance on equipment.

Solid Waste Disposal

This position within the County Landfill is to operate and perform routine preventative maintenance on various types of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, motor graders, equipment crane, pans, compactors, etc. Duties include spreading, compacting and covering waste; digging trenches; grading and stock piling soil.

Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Essential Functions (and other duties as assigned)

• Waste Compaction & Grading: Operating specialized landfill compactors and bulldozers to push, level, and crush refuse into dense layers to conserve space.
• Daily Cover Application: Covering compacted waste with soil or alternative daily cover (ADC) to control odors, pests, and blowing litter.
• Site Maintenance: Grading access roads, maintaining drainage ditches, and managing stormwater pollution controls.
• Traffic Direction & Screening: Guiding commercial and public vehicles to the correct dumping areas and inspecting incoming loads for prohibited or hazardous materials.
• Equipment Upkeep: Conducting pre- and post-shift safety inspections, lubricating parts, and performing minor preventative maintenance

Additional Duties

• Transports equipment to job sites.
• Executes routine preventive maintenance on department vehicles and equipment. Completes vehicle and equipment maintenance inspection and indicates when service and repairs are needed. Issues are reported to supervisor.
• Performs related work as assigned.

• Must be able to sit for long periods
• Climb in and out of equipment
• Occasionally lift heavy objects
• Working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Type: Full Time

Workdays are Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm
Salary Range: $40,445.64 to $60,668.45

REQUIRED Education and Experience:

• High School graduate or GED equivalent.
• One year of heavy equipment operation experience or related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses

• Valid S.C. CDL Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements
• Solid Waste Disposal-SCDHEC Landfill Operator Certification
