Job summary

Greenwood County is seeking a team-oriented worker to join the road crew. You will operate and perform routine preventative maintenance on heavy equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, motor graders, cranes, and more.

Duties include operating machinery for grading, paving, drainage work and vegetation removal, plus setting up work zones, directing traffic, and ensuring safety. A CDL is required and a skills assessment must be completed.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or GED equivalent.
• One year of heavy equipment operation experience or related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Physically able to operate a variety of machines including motor grader, tractor, backhoe, trucks, bushhogs, and maintenance equipment.
• Successful completion of heavy equipment skill set assessment provided by Greenwood County Public Works.
• Valid Class A SC Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy machinery to accomplish road construction and maintenance tasks.
• Transports materials and grades/compacts roads.
• Sets up work zones and traffic control for safety.
• Directs traffic with paddle signs or flags at the job site.
• Receives work orders and completes jobs as prescribed by the department.
• Transports equipment to job sites.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
• Reports service and repair needs to supervisor.

Job description

Greenwood County is looking for a team player to join the road crew. In this position you will operate and perform routine preventative maintenance on various types of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, motor graders, equipment crane, pans, compactors, etc.

Duties include but not limited to:

• Operates heavy machinery to accomplish a variety of road construction and maintenance tasks, including gathering and transporting materials, grading and compacting roads, paving roads, digging drainage ditches, repairing roads and driveways, removing trees and vegetation adjacent to roads, building and installing catch basins, etc.
• Equipment may Include a backhoe, front end loader, bushhog, bulldozer, crawler loader, motor grader, trucks, tractor, crane, slope mowers and mowers.
• Utilizes various types of tools as necessary to perform road maintenance and construction duties, including a chain saw, weed eater, hand tools, mechanic's tools, surveying equipment and two-way radio.
• Assists in traffic control for the job site.
• Sets up work zone and places construction signs and barricades for employee safety.
• Directs traffic at the job site using paddle signs or flags.
• Receives work orders and completes jobs in a timely manner as prescribed by the department.

Additional Duties

• Transports equipment to job sites.
• Executes routine preventive maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
• Completes vehicle and equipment maintenance inspection and indicates when service and repairs that are needed. Issues are reported to supervisor.
• Performs related work as assigned

Workdays are Monday through Thursday, 10-hour shifts; Weekends and overtime are as needed

Salary: $40,445.64 - $60,668.45

Required Education and Experience

• High School graduate or GED equivalent.
• One year of heavy equipment operation experience or related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Physically able to operate a variety of types of machines and heavy equipment including motor grader, tractor, backhoe, trucks, bushhogs, and various general maintenance equipment
• Successful completion of heavy equipment skill set assessment provided by Greenwood County Public Works.
• Valid Class A SC Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
