Job summary

City of Springfield, TN is seeking a skilled construction worker to operate a range of street, paving and maintenance equipment. The role emphasizes safe operation, routine maintenance and adherence to city and state regulations.

Candidates must have a High School diploma and a valid Class A CDL, pass drug and physical tests, and be prepared for outdoor work in varied weather.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with experience in operation of equipment and machinery or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Class A CDL driver license issued by Tennessee.
  • Drug screen and physical examination required per city procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Operate street sweepers, loaders, graders, snow plows, salting equipment, dump and refuse trucks.
  • Operate paving, asphalt, and concrete equipment for street construction.
  • Remove brush and debris from city streets with boom truck.
  • Transport equipment or materials to and from job sites.
  • Perform skilled construction work including excavation and welding as needed.
  • Inspect and perform basic maintenance on equipment; keep it clean.
  • Operate small tools for manual labor tasks.

Job description

Purpose of Job

Performs skilled construction work, including the operation of on and off-road motorized equipment.

  • Operates vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to street sweepers, loaders, graders, snow plows, street salting equipment, and dump and refuse trucks.
  • Operates paving, asphalt, and concrete equipment for street construction and other projects.
  • Removes brush and debris from city streets by operating a boom truck.
  • Transports equipment or materials to and from designated job site.
  • Performs skilled construction work involving excavation and welding as needed.
  • Inspects, maintains and performs basic repairs and maintenance on equipment used.
  • Routinely cleans and washes equipment and vehicles.
  • Operates small motorized and hand tools to perform manual labor activities.
Purpose of Job

Essential Job Duties
  • Operates vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to street sweepers, loaders, graders, snow plows, street salting equipment, and dump and refuse trucks.
  • Operates paving, asphalt, and concrete equipment for street construction and other projects.

Other Job Duties
  • Performs manual labor as required including debris pickup, flagging traffic, mowing, clearing rights-of-way, and cleaning catch basins.
  • Repairs roads, spreads gravel or digs ditches as a part of a street construction and maintenance crew.
  • Responds to after-hours and emergency calls as required.
  • Assists with loading and unloading trucks.
  • Performs related work as required.

Equipment Operated

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of equipment and tools used in construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices.
  • Knowledge of city and department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to operate and service vehicles, equipment, machinery, power and hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to supervise unskilled workers.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time at a steady pace, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to create operational records.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work both indoors and outdoors and will sit, stand, stoop, walk, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds).
  • Employee will be exposed to biohazard waste, electrical currents, environmental hazards, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noise, machinery and its moving parts, noxious odors, poor ventilation, and work space restriction.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma with experience in the operation of equipment and machinery, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.

Required Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid Class A CDL driver license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
