CITY OF STAUNTON

Equipment Operator I-Street Sweeper Operator

The City of Staunton's Public Works Department is seeking an Equipment Operator I-Street Sweeper Operator to join its team in the Streets Division. Successful candidate performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of street sweeping equipment and related maintenance vehicles to clean city streets, parking lots, and other public spaces. Responsible for the daily care, inspection, and minor maintenance of assigned equipment. May perform manual labor and other support tasks as needed within the Public Works Streets Division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

• Operates street sweeper and related heavy equipment to clean City streets, alleys, and parking areas according to established routes and seasonal needs.


• Inspects and services equipment daily, including checking fluid levels, cleaning filters, greasing fittings, and checking for wear or mechanical issues.


• Clears debris from curb lines and stormwater inlets before and during sweeping operations.


• Performs manual labor as needed, including removing large debris or blockages.


• Maintains accurate logs of sweeping routes, mileage, and maintenance performed.


• Operates other equipment as needed (e.g., pickup trucks, dump trucks, leaf vacuums, blowers).


• Assists with snow and ice removal operations, including driving plow-equipped trucks and applying deicing material.


• Reports hazards, infrastructure damage, and equipment malfunctions to the supervisor promptly.


• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma or equivalent.


• Minimum one (1) year of experience operating motorized maintenance equipment, preferably street sweepers or similar.


• Experience in a public works, construction, or maintenance environment is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B or higher (or obtain within 6 months of hire).


• Must maintain a safe driving record.


• May be required to work evenings, early mornings, weekends, and holidays during special events, emergencies, or inclement weather.


• This position is subject to inclusion in the department's rotating on-call schedule and must be available to respond to after-hours calls, including during snow removal operations, emergencies, or urgent street maintenance needs.

Individual is subject to pre-employment physical/drug screening and random drug testing.

Hiring Range: $18.00 to $20.00/hour DOE/DOQ (+) excellent benefits. Position is open until filled.
