Job summary

The City of Fayetteville is seeking an Equipment Operator I in the Parks, Recreation & Maintenance department to operate construction and maintenance equipment supporting parks, cemeteries, streets and related operations.

Six months' experience with light equipment and a valid driver's license are required, along with a high school diploma. The role includes maintenance, equipment transport, traffic control and basic repairs.

Qualifications

• Six months of experience operating light construction/maintenance equipment.
• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
• Candidate must be able to transport equipment to job sites and perform basic repairs.

Responsibilities

• Operate light construction equipment such as tractors and riding mowers as part of parks, cemetery, street maintenance or transit operations.
• Perform maintenance on city-owned properties including parks, streets and drainage systems.
• Complete grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, seeding, weeding and minor repairs.
• Identify equipment needs, transport to sites, inspect and secure equipment after use.
• Maintain records of work performed and perform basic preventive maintenance.
• Install street barricades and cones and direct traffic around work sites.

Job description

The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for an Equipment Operator I in our Parks, Recreation & Maintenance department to operate construction and maintenance equipment in support of a variety of parks, horticulture, cemetery, airport, transit or solid waste collection vehicles and equipment activities including mowing, loading and related operations; and to perform other parks, horticulture, airport, street maintenance, solid waste or transit operations.

1. Operate light construction power-driven equipment, such as tractors, riding mowers, push-mowers, small dump trucks, solid waste collection vehicles and a variety of other equipment in support of maintenance, solid waste and construction operations.
2. Participate in the repair and maintenance of city owned properties such as parks, cemeteries, city streets, roads, alleyways, bus shelters, benches, solar lights, bus stop signs and/or drainage systems.
3. Perform additional grounds maintenance, construction and maintenance tasks such as mowing, clearing fence lines of obstructions, seeding, weeding, truck driving, and a variety of minor repair activities.
4. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; transport and deliver equipment to and from construction sites or bus stop locations; maintain equipment; inspect equipment prior to use; secure equipment following use.
5. Maintain records and logs of all work performed and complete basic preventive maintenance on light equipment as required.
6. Transport construction equipment and materials as needed.
7. Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
8. Perform routine repairs to plumbing, electrical and mechanical fixtures and equipment.

Experience

• Six months of experience involving the skilled operation of light construction and maintenance equipment in parks, cemeteries, horticulture environments, street repair/maintenance, transit operations or related field.

Training

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS

Required

• Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability.

Preferred

• Safety course completion; Defensive Driving course completion; Biohazard course completion; Flagger certification; Pesticide Applicator license.

From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last 4 - 6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen, background check and driving history check.
