Job summary

The Town of Zebulon seeks an Equipment Operator to perform routine work involving the operation of motorized equipment and a variety of maintenance tasks. The individual will ensure the upkeep of public spaces and respond to maintenance needs, while maintaining effective working relationships with citizens. Ideal candidates must possess a high school diploma, relevant experience, and a strong ability to operate specialized tools safely.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years experience in maintenance work preferred.
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • NCDOT certified flagger preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates motorized equipment and performs maintenance tasks.
  • Handles landscaping and cleaning tasks including waste and snow removal.
  • Responds to customer issues and emergency events as required.

Job description

Performs routine work operating motorized equipment and performs a variety of manual labor.Under the general supervision of the Public Works Crew Leader

  1. Performs routine equipment operator work in maintaining and repairing structures, facilities, and grounds.
  2. Performs building and grounds maintenance functions, equipment maintenance, yardwaste, leaves, bulky waste and snow removal, cleaning storm drainage devices, sidewalk repairs, signage maintenance, resurfacing cuts in streets, and ditch maintenance
  3. Performs maintenance and servicing of equipment.
  4. Assists with a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled general landscaping and maintenance related tasks.
  5. Performs various department related general maintenance functions.
  6. Responds to, investigates and documents customer issues.
  7. Responds to emergency or disaster events as required.
  8. Serves on rotation of on-call duties as assigned.
  9. Performs all other duties as required.

  1. Knowledge of equipment operation and general maintenance work performed by a municipality.
  2. Skilled in the operation of assigned tools and equipment which include, but are not limited to mowers, backhoe, mini excavator, tractors, bush-hog, and various operating tools and equipment.
  3. The ability to make minor and significant adjustments and repairs to equipment operated.
  4. Ability to efficiently and safely operate assigned equipment.
  5. Capable of identifying and reporting to a supervisor the maintenance needs of various structures or equipment.
  6. Must be able to work independently.
  7. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with citizens and other employees.
  8. Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  9. Good working knowledge of hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the performance of duties.
  10. Basic knowledge of work zone safety standards.

Physical Requirements

  1. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words), hearing (perceiving nature of sounds by ear), and perform repetitive motions.
  2. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  3. Work is subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Desirable Education and Experience

  1. High school diploma or the equivalent and the ability to read and write.
  2. Should have 2-4 years experience in the area of maintenance work.
  3. NCDOT certified flagger preferred but not required.
  4. Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within 1 year, subject to reimbursement agreement.
