The hiring range for this position is $33,566.74 (minimum salary) to $46,226.51 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the Equipment Operator I.

The hiring range for this position is $35,266.06 (minimum salary) to $48,544.91 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for the Equipment Operator II.

This position performs responsible skilled work in the operation of medium motorized and specialized equipment in the Streets division. Successful performance results in completion of construction, maintenance, and repair projects.

The work consists of related duties in the operation of medium and specialized equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair. Physical obstacles in the field contribute to the complexity of the work.

Major Duties
  • Operate medium equipment as defined by the City's garage to perform construction responsibilities;
  • Service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment;
  • Perform other responsibilities related to operations as assigned;
  • Operate heavy equipment as a trainee;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Guidelines
  • Guidelines include relevant city and department policies and procedures, OSHA guidelines, and federal, state and local regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Education/Experience Requirements
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within sixty days of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment utilized;
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations;
  • Knowledge of city ordinances, policies, and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and of assigned routes;
  • Knowledge of relevant departmental policies, safety procedures, and guidelines;
  • Skill in the use of equipment;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.
Equipment Operator II
Education/Experience Requirements
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within sixty days of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy and/or specialized equipment utilized;
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations;
  • Knowledge of city ordinances, policies, and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and of assigned routes;
  • Knowledge of relevant departmental policies, safety procedures, and guidelines;
  • Skill in the use of equipment;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended period, often under unfavorable weather conditions;
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors.

The work is typically performed at field sites while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee may be subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, and exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
