Job summary

The City of Seguin is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to perform duties with light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt and materials for drainage, streets, mowing, and other maintenance of City Right of Ways. Under immediate supervision, you may supervise staff and plan daily work for the crew.

Starting pay is $19.68 per hour; Class A or B CDL is required within one year; a high school diploma or equivalent plus experience operating light equipment is required.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent and at least one year of experience operating light equipment.
  • Or two years of experience operating light equipment with ability to read/write.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training providing required knowledge and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Operates light to heavy equipment as required to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt and materials for drainage, streets, brush removal, mowing, and related maintenance.
  • Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems; performs routine inspections for safe operation.
  • Assists with setup of work zone barricades and traffic control signs.
  • Maintains city right of ways and city properties; plans daily work for crew in absence of supervisor.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads materials for projects; performs light plumbing, maintenance, or carpentry duties as needed.
  • Observes safety rules and procedures and maintains a safe work environment.

Job description

  • Position Type: Skilled Trades/ Equipment Operator

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work operating light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of drainage, streets, brush collection, brush chipping and mowing of City Right of Ways. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff. (Operates light equipment to accomplish assigned activities; may include driving trucks.)

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Operates light equipment such as a tractor, mower, chainsaw, weed eater, shredder, chipper, leaf compactor, or truck as required and instructed;

Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition;

Assists with set-up of work zone barricades and signs for traffic control

Provides assistance with and suggestions for increased safety during assigned projects;

Maintains city right of ways and other city properties;

Plans work day for crew in absence of supervisor;

Loads, transports, and unloads necessary materials for assigned projects;

May performs light plumbing, maintenance, construction, and/or carpentry duties;

Observes all safety rules and procedures;

Other Important Duties

Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle code relating to operation of light and heavy motorized equipment; and sufficient skills to operate this equipment effectively and safely.

Physical Ability to: lift and maneuver up to 85 pounds (i.e. construction materials, pipe, bags of concrete, etc.); climb and maintain balance on ladder; ascend and descend up to 30" high steps numerous times per day; do repetitive bending and kneeling; and perform strenuous work in the outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

Ability to: read and understand construction and utility diagrams; service and make minor repairs on equipment and to know safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow written and oral instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other employees; and maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record.

Other: may be required to have ability to read and follow construction and utility diagrams.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

High school graduation, or its equivalent, and at least one year of experience operating light equipment;

or sufficient education to read and write, plus at least two years of experience operating light equipment;

or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED

Class "A or B" Commercial Driver's License is required within one (1) year of employment. Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Starting Salary: $19.68/hour
