Job summary

The City of Seguin is looking for an Operator I for Tree Trimming, responsible for maintaining City-owned trees for public safety. Duties include planting, pruning, trimming, and removing trees, as well as ensuring public views of traffic signals are not obstructed.

Candidates should have a high school diploma and three years of experience in landscape or tree maintenance. A State of Texas Class B driver's license is required, along with the ability to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions. Starting salary is $20.66/hour.

Operator I – Tree Trimming

Under immediate supervision, maintains City-owned trees for public safety; plants, prunes, trims, removes and cares for City trees; inspects trees to ensure that public views of street traffic signals, signs or intersections are not blocked; trims trees around energized power lines.

Examples of Work

Maintain City trees for public safety by performing tree pruning and tree removal functions; remove dead and damaged limbs and trees.

Perform brush chipping, root pruning and stump grinding.

Use climbing saddle, rope and harness to access and move safely in trees.

Operate and maintain tree-trimming equipment including trucks, aerial lift truck, chain saws, pole pruner, root pruner, stump grinder, and brush chipper.

Perform traffic control to ensure safety of cars, pedestrians and tree crew in traffic areas.

Perform roadside clean-up of trash and weeds.

Plant, water, fertilize and care for City trees.

Respond to emergency calls regarding fallen trees or limbs.

Assist maintenance workers with chipping of tree limbs and brush.

Inspect trees for potential faults, insects, and diseases.

Hauls brush and wood from the jobsite to the truck.

Use of various hand and power tools.

Acting as a grounds man on the job site.

Other Important Duties

Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: Practices, methods, and materials used in planting, pruning and removing trees; Tools, material and equipment needed to maintain City trees; Traffic control including placement of cones and warning signs.

Demonstrated ability to: Perform CPR; lift and maneuver up to 112 lbs. (i.e. loading and unloading debris of tree removals); perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions.

Ability to: Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; maintain records and files; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees and the general public as well as vendors.

Other: may handle toxic and/or hazardous materials or work in areas where such materials may be stored.

Acceptable Experience and Training

High school graduation or its equivalent. Three years of experience in landscape or tree maintenance, closely related field or equivalent is preferred;

or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certificates and Licenses Required

State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license.

Must be able to maintain Cardio Pulmonary Certification.

Salary

Starting Salary: $20.66/hour
